An investigation into the destruction of a Nigerian passport at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, has been launched by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). The incident has raised serious public and official concerns. It was recorded on camera and extensively disseminated on social media. The person who has been identified as the perpetrator of the act is Mrs. Favour Igiebor, whose passport number is A11990869.
NIS Public Relations Officer Kenneth Udo verified in an official statement that the Comptroller General of Immigration has mandated an investigation into the situation. It's anticipated that Mrs. Igiebor will be questioned in further detail to find out what happened before the passport was destroyed.
The NIS has highlighted the seriousness of the matter, stating that Mrs. Igiebor's conduct may have violated Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as modified) if the charges are confirmed.
The deliberate destruction of Nigerian travel documents is forbidden by this legislation section, and the consequences of such offenses are outlined in Section 10(h) of the same Act.
Shortly after they arrived in Nigeria, Mrs. Igiebor allegedly tore her husband's foreign passport at the Lagos Airport on Saturday, August 10, 2024.
A noticeably irritated Mrs. Igiebor can be seen in the event footage asking, "Is it your passport?" in response to an inquiry regarding her behavior. The video also shows airport staff trying to diffuse the tension by telling Mrs. Igiebor's husband not to respond angrily to what happened. It is illegal to "(c)unlawfully alter, tamper with, or mutilate any passport or any pages thereof" or "(I) to attempt, aid, abet, counsel, procure, or conspire with any other person to commit such an offense," according to Section 1 (1) of the Passport (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act.
"Any person found guilty of an offence under paragraphs (b) to (i) of subsection (1) of dis section is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year," reads section two of this Act.
