Oyo partners IAR&T, CRIN, Agric Cooperatives, Farmers, OANDO, NBC to celebrate Amala Fiesta.

The government of Oyo State has stated that it is partnering research institutes, farmers, agricultural cooperatives and corporate organisations to promote the agricultural, nutritional, economic and health benefits of Amala, a popular delicacy of the Yoruba culture.

The state commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism Mr. Toye Arulogun, who disclosed this in a statement on the forthcoming Amala Fiesta on Thursday, stated that food tourism is a vital segment of tourism, stressing that the benefits inherent in Amala are too numerous to ignore.

Arulogun explained that Amala Fiesta with the theme “From the Farm to the Table” would be used to espouse and celebrate the agricultural, nutritional, economic and health benefits of Amala, adding that the state government is partnering the appropriate stakeholders for the fiesta to achieve its objectives.

He said that the government is partnering with two research institutes, Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), Moore Plantation Ibadan, and Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria ((CRIN), Agric Cooperators from the Ministry of Trade, Cooperative and Investment, farmers, OANDO energy and Nigeria Bottling Company (NBC) amongst others for the successful hosting of the fiesta holding between December 15 and 17, 2016 at Trans Amusement Park, Ibadan

The commissioner added that the ministry is organizing the fiesta in conjunction with Tourist Care, Hospitality Association of Nigeria (TCHAN), Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Agriculture and Canteen Owners Association of Nigeria to celebrate Oyo State’s foremost delicacy, which has become a national pride with international presence and worldwide acceptance.

According to Arulogun, “Amala Fiesta also known as Ajodun oka is not just a food and cultural tourism event, but a celebration of the Yoruba food culture. The culture and tourism sector could be a viable revenue earner for states that develop it and we are ready to develop the sector to ensure the preservation of our culture, propagation of our cultural heritage and the promotion of our cultural tourism potentials which could earn the state more revenue and create wealth for the citizens”.

“Amala fiesta will be used to create wealth, empower farmers, showcase different types of related agricultural produce and promote the health benefits of the delicacy. Based on our findings, we discovered that Amala lowers cancer risks, builds the immune system, good for diabetic patients, improves eye sight and helps in weight loss.

“These are some of the benefits that our people do not know and we have invited stakeholders who will x-tray the health, economic, nutritional and agricultural values of Amala to the whole world during the 3 day food tourism event,” the government spokesman added.

Friends, Associates Gather to Celebrate Bola Davies.

Since the news of her shocking transition on October 19, 2016 hit journalists like a bolt, Bola Davies’ friends and associates have been expressing shock at the sudden passage of City People Magazine’s Oyo/Osun Bureau Chief.

Saturday 22 October 2016

"My Journey Into Journalism Through Bola Davies".-Dare Adeniran.

What can I say or write? Where should I even start from? Those are the questions I have had to ask myself in the last two days. In fact, it got to a point that it felt like I was dreaming until I saw your grave yesterday. Then it finally dawned on me that you are gone for good, that we can never see again till we meet to path no more.

But I can only take solace in the fact that death is inevitable or how can one explain your sudden exit?

I left home early on Thursday 20th October, 2016, that your death news hit me like hard rock.

Coincidentally, I was driving towards your house when the call came in. The voice at the other end was Dr. Seye Kehinde, the Publisher of City Magazine "Dare, how are you? How is Bola? We have not heard from her and we said we should cross check from you".

I responded quickly as usual, that she was very okay, that I was going to find out and get back to them on why her phone was off, knowing fully well that I was very close to her house.

Only for 'oga', as we normal address Dr Seye, to call me back and asked "like how many minutes should I expect your feedback". Still, I didn't sense something had gone wrong.

Not until another call came in almost immediately after oga's own and it was BKK Ultimo boss, Alhaji Bashir Kolawole Kuti who broke the news to me in a very low tone "Dare, how are you? They said Bola is dead o! As if I didn't hear him properly. Which Bola? The next thing I heard was what are we going to do now? I became so confused that no reasonable answer followed that particular question. I made another call and it was confirmed.

Bola Davies joined the saints on Wednesday 19th October, 2016. And her death brought to mind the great, dull and worst moments we've shared together. She was more than a boss to me; we bonded almost immediately I joined City People Ibadan office, as an Admin Staff, I was directly working under her supervision.

The relationship, within a short space of time, transformed from being colleagues to a family bond. My problem was her problem, while I reciprocated in the same manner. We were each other's best friend and confidant. There was hardly a day passed by without seeing each other.

Even sometimes when I felt we were fighting she would call to blast me, "Dare, Iwo lo mo malice t'o n keep o! gist dey, how soon can you come over to my place? I give you 30 minutes." My house is just about 10 minutes drive to hers.

She trained and encouraged me to be writing stories, as nothing was too much to achieve with her. I could still remember vividly the very first assignment she gave me. The assignment was to get something done with the then first lady of Oyo State, Chief (Mrs) Mutiat Olayinka Ladoja. I was on a 6 months probation without the company's identity card. After the project was executed she said yes! "I like your zeal, it seems you are ready for this job."

That and many other assignments I carried out for the company made my confirmation faster than usual.

We formed a very powerful team together afterwards; Sister Bola, myself and Wole Adejumo, my senior colleague and brother (my Editor).

The team, through Bola Davies' exemplary leadership, became so strong and performed excellently well in terms of story writing and events planning. Ibadan office was at its best.

She was a kind of person that will do all it requires to bring out the best in you no matter how painful or stressful it may be. And that actually propelled me to becoming an awards winning staff.

She was always there for me up till the time I was transferred to Osun State as City People's Correspondent, she still stood by me despite the challenges here and there.

I must also say that I benefited immensely from her generosity, I can't even start talking about that now but her L.G microwave (which was my first) she dashed me is still functioning several years after.

With Bola Davies, getting the job done was the goal no matter how difficult it may be at times.

"When you are not a spy! You are a society reporter. You must go out, you must go to parties and you must meet people." Those wordskept re-vibrating in my head now. I can't count the number of times you said those words to me as I'm not an outgoing person naturally. Truly, I later realised the power in networking, most especially as a journalist.

Bola Davies, you were an accomplished journalist; highly intelligent, beautiful, a fashionista, socialite per excellence, bridge-builder, an amazing and dynamic woman of high quality.

My heart goes to your family at this very moment and I pray that God will give them the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss, including us, your loved ones.

The City People family will miss you, my wife, my daughters will miss you as there is no going to be "dad, let's go to Sister Bola's house" again. The Ice Cream, Rice Crisppies and co will not come from you to them anymore.

I will miss you the most, my Omobolanle Olufunke Davies (Nee Ogunsuyi), my gist partner, my friend, my sister, my boss.

I'm not going to get the 'strong-worded text messages' from you anymore.

Lastly, I'm sure the little secret I kept away from you must have become clearly open to you now; the letter through which you recommended me for query and asked me to help you drop at Lagos office never got there. I still have it with me. Wole Adejumo knew about it anyways.

Once more, thanks for the training and discipline you instilled in us.

Adieu dear sister!

Oyo State Government Says No To Automatic Promotion Policy

The Oyo State Government has said that it would not renege on its decision to stop automatic promotions in public secondary schools in the state saying that its decision to reform the education sector would be pursued rigorously until it yields positive results.

The state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Toye Arulogun said this at the weekend while featuring on Saturday Special, a weekend magazine programme of the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS).

Arulogun said that it was unacceptable for Oyo state to occupy the rung of the ladder positions in the senior school certificate examinations (WAEC and NECO) when it should be setting the pace, stressing that the state is known for many firsts and her education sector should be the benchmark for others.

The government spokesman said that the on-going reforms in the education sector was inevitable because of the consistent high number of failures in WAEC Examinations which is a key yardstick for performance measurement, adding that no amount of protests would deter the state from changing its stand on the no automatic promotion policy  in public secondary schools in the state.

According to him, “We cannot encourage automatic promotion with the woeful performance of our students in examinations in the last 15 years.  The statistics we have from the Ministry of Education strongly support the state government’s stance. In the Year 2008, 61,232 sat for the exam, 5,608 passed, Year 2009 60,444 sat for the exam, 7,204 passed. Year 2010, 65,330 sat for the exam, 8,757 passed, in   2011, 72,559 sat for the exam and 12,314 passed while in 2012, there were 75, 179 candidates and 12,314 passed.

“The situation has been the same in the last three years. In 2013, 74,319 wrote the exams, 16,049 passed, in the year 2014, 77,685 sat for the exam and 16,197 passed and in  2015, there were 78,897 candidates and  17,051 passed. The step to sustain the cancellation of automatic promotion was taken in the overall interest of the public. We must give our children quality education,” Arulogun emphasized quoting information from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

In a similar vein, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela has assured teachers and students in the state public schools of maximum security in schools, saying that security men and the National Association of Parents Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) Oyo State chapter have been alerted on the need to protect and monitor schools in the state.

Olowofela, while on an on the spot assessment to Oba Akinbiyi High School II Mokola Ibadan following the incident of an assault on a teacher of the school by a man who is said to be mentally derailed, reiterated that the Ajimobi led administration keeps the welfare and security of the people in the front burner.

The commissioner said the government frowned at the attitude of a minute section of students who embarked on protests in Oyo town over the no automatic promotion policy of the government, advising that parents and guardians should warn their wards to desist from such unwarranted protests.

Professor Olowofela stated that the step was taken in the overall interest of the public, stressing, “It is an established fact that education is the bedrock of individual and societal development and indeed a veritable tool for achieving the growth of any nation. To this end, we must give our children quality education.

He noted that the state government would continue to enforce the no automatic promotion policy in public secondary schools and consequently enjoined parents, teachers and stakeholders to support and adhere strictly to the policy.

Oyo NUP Ultimatum Uncalled For.- Comissioner For LG

Oyo State Government has expressed its displeasure over the 14-day ultimatum given by the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), saying that, it has approved, on Friday 7th October 2016, the release of N880million for the payment of pensions of retired Local Government Pensioners across the State.

This statement was made by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr. Bimbo Kolade on Tuesday, stating that, funds for payment of backlog of pension arrears have been approved last week during the monthly Joint Account Allocation Committee meeting held last Friday with all the Caretaker chairmen of Local Government Areas in the state.

According to him, “facts and figures I have with me from Local Government Staff Pensions Board indicates that Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Friday, 7th October 2016, approved the sum of N880 million for the payment of arrears being owed retired Local Government Primary School teachers and Local Government retirees,” he said.

Condemning the publication by the Nigerian Union of Pensioners, Oyo State chapter as mischievous, baseless and unacceptable, the Commissioner said that the 14-day ultimatum was unnecessary as funds had already been approved for the purpose last week.

Mr. Kolade, while assuring Local government retirees of Government’s commitment to their welfare, by ensuring prompt payment of their entitlements, also implored them to ensure that they attend the ongoing verification exercise being carried out by the Pension’s Board.

The Commissioner explained that the verification exercise has assisted the state government through the Local Government Staff Pensions Board in discovering about 400 names of pensioners whose gratuities are pending, but “have issues with their data”,.

Mr. Kolade also appealed to Labour leaders in the state to always embrace dialogue rather than confrontations on the pages of newspaper, especially at a time when the labour-government standing committee constantly meets to proffer solutions to issues of wages, salaries and pensions in the state.
