N50million Bribe: Two Chinese Nationals Jailed Six Years Each

Justice Abubakar Mahmud Talba of the Court of Appeal, Sokoto Division on Friday, 31st March 2023 convicted and sentenced two Chinese nationals, Meng Wei Kun and Mr. Xu Kuai, to three years imprisonment for each of the two count charge for offences of Conspiracy, Money Laundering and attempted Bribery to the tune of N50 Million (Fifty Million Naira) brought against them by the Sokoto Zonal Command of the EFCC.

The judgement is sequel to EFCC's appeal brought against the judgment of the Federal High Court Sokoto, which discharged and acquitted the accused persons on all the three three count charge.

Delivering the unanimous judgment, Justice Talba berated the respondents that tried to frustrate the appeal through maneuverings stating that, "gone are the days of technicalities in law". He further emphasized that going forward, courts must allow cases to be heard on its merits.

Justice Talba further explained that the EFCC had proven counts one and two of the three count charge before the Federal High Court beyond reasonable doubt but agreed with the lower Court on count three and accordingly struck it out because a similar charge is pending before the High Court of Justice Sokoto State.

According to Justice Talba, "the respondents are charged with Conspiracy and making a cash payment in excess of the threshold provided by the Money Laundering Prohibition Act 2011 as amended in 2012 to Abdullahi Lawal (then zonal head of EFCC Sokoto) which was established beyond reasonable doubt before the lower Court. But surprisingly, the trial Judge summersaulted in his judgement and recanted".

Justice Talba added, "I regret to say that the judgment is like a fiction by the trial judge who created doubts in his mind while discharging his responsibilities. Without doubt, the trial judge grossly misconceived that no offence was committed"

The Judge said further, "conspiracy is a distinct offence even if the commission of the actual offence is aborted, and in the instant case, there exists positive cogent inescapable evidence the offence was committed".

He, therefore, held that the appeal is "immensely meritorious". He, therefore, convicted and sentenced the Chinese nationals to three years on each of the two counts with an option of N10 million fine each on each count.

On a final note, the judge said, "before i draw the curtain, the respondents are Chinese and an offence of this gravity in their home country attracts the death penalty, yet here they are corrupting our country. The courts of the Federal Republic of Nigeria will not condone corruption in any way; as President Muhammadu Buhari has said 'if we don't kill corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria".

EFCC Arraigns Popular Ibadan Club Owner, 'SSG' Over Covid-19 Benefits Scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan Zonal Command on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 arraigned the owner of Ibadan-based Club, De Rock Club, Adepoju Olawale Sunday alias SSG before Justice Uche Agomoh of the Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State on two separate charges for his alleged involvement in cybercrime and obtaining money under false pretence to the tune of N31, 821, 000.00 (Thirty One Million, Eight Hundred and Twenty One Thousand Naira).

The first charge, containing eight counts, bordering on identity theft, obtaining COVID – 19 and unemployment benefits from the United States of America Government, while the other 19- count charge is premised on transfer of proceeds of crime to one Owoade Emmanuel David.

Investigations revealed that Adepoju, 36, who claimed to be a graduate of Industrial Chemistry of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Osun State had, during the COVID – 19 pandemic swindled American government and unsuspecting American citizens thousands of dollars.

He allegedly stole identities of the American citizens eligible for the tax refund programme across the U.S and filed the stolen information to claim the benefits.

Investigations also showed that Adepoju through the US Small Business Administration (SBA), a programme established in New York City during Covid-19 to help Americans build resilient businesses, stole personal identifying information of American citizens which he deployed in filing false benefits claims.

The defendant pleaded ‘not guilty’ when the charges were read to him.

Consequently, the prosecution counsel, Mabas Mabur asked the court for a trial date and remand the defendant pending the determination of the case.

However, counsel to the defendant, Olaniyi George informed the court that he has filed two separate bail applications on behalf of his client and prayed the court to grant the defendant bail.

However, Mabur told the court to reject the applications on the grounds that the defendant is a flight risk who has pending charges against him in other law courts.

Justice Agomoh, adjourned the matter till April 18, 2023 for ruling and ordered that the defendant be remanded in the Agodi Correctional facility.

The defendant was arrested on August 31, 2022, alongside 21 other suspected internet fraudsters, in an intelligence-driven operation carried out by the operatives of the Ibadan Zonal Command of the EFCC.

He was arrested with a 2020 Range Rover HSE Sports Utility Vehicle, an iPhone 13 Pro Max and Hp laptop, among others.

In all of this, the two people fighting have not brought the first child of the family and the first son, Simi Diya into their decisions.

Unfortunately, Simi at this period is fighting the battle of his life as he is awaiting a life-saving procedure in the UK, making it a bit slower for him to come down and take his rightful place in the scheme of things.

The warring family members are taking advantage of Simi's illness to usurp him in the scheme of things.

They have gone ahead to meet with the Governor of Ogun State in taking decisions towards the burial, leaving Simi in the dark at to discussions.

They have started searching documents in t bedroom of the deceased and doing so many things against the principles of good conscience.

Simi is in pains right now and he needs to be heard.

General Olusegun Obasanjo has written a condolence letter directed to Simi, the way it should be done in Yoruba land, where the first male child is seen as the natural leader in the family.

Court Convicts Woman Over N47m Fraud In Lagos

Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, on Monday, March 27, 2023, convicted one Adanu Blessing Ajumi, who was prosecuted for N47m fraud.

Adanu, who is accused of trading under the name and style of Emerald Multipurpose Cooperative Society to defraud her victims in a purported agribusiness scheme, was charged with two counts bordering on obtaining money by false pretence, contrary to Section 1(1) and 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006, and stealing, contrary to Section 278 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos 2011.

She pleaded "not guilty" to the charges when she was arraigned on December 19, 2019, thereby leading to her trial that commenced on September 14, 2020.

In the course of the trial, the prosecution counsel, S.O. Daji, called three witnesses through whom several documentary evidence were tendered and admitted by the court against her.

The defence counsel, Peter Ola, called four witnesses, including the defendant who testified as the fourth witness.

However, the defendant stopped appearing in court upon the closure of her defence on June 30, 2022.

In view of this, Daji, at the proceedings of November 3, 2022, applied to the court to revoke the bail of the defendant and allow the trial to continue in absentia.

During the November 3, 2022 sitting, there was no objection from her counsel, O. Ajanaku, in court.

Justice Dada, therefore, revoked the bail earlier granted the defendant and further issued a bench warrant for her arrest.

The Judge also ordered that the EFCC declare her wanted.

On December 2, 2022, when the final addresses were to be adopted by both parties, Adanu was, again, absent, as Daji informed the court that frantic efforts were still being made to secure her arrest.

Daji, citing Section 14 (4) of the Criminal Law of Lagos Society, had urged the court to continue with the adoption of the final written addresses.

Following the adoption of the final written addresses by both parties, Justice Dada adjourned for judgment.

Delivering judgment today, Justice Dada dismissed the argument of the defence that the charges emanated from "contractual disputes that are purely civil in nature".

The trial judge also held that, based on the evidence before the court, including the statements made by the defendant during interrogation, the prosecution effectively proved all the essential ingredients of obtaining by false pretence and stealing.

The trial judge further noted that, as argued by the prosecution, most economic and financial crimes arise from transactions that have a semblance of contractual transactions, but along the line, "a lot of factors come in to derail the smooth sail, when the heart of man begins to dialogue with the devil to outsmart another person and he succumbs to it."

The court further noted that her oral testimony in court that the agribusiness was affected by flooding and Fulani herdsmen attacks were "an after-thought."

The Judge held that "She wanted to be living big at the expense of other people without counting the cost.

"Although the defendant seems to have absconded, having jumped the bail graciously granted her by this court, the truth is that she cannot run away from justice.

"From the foregoing, therefore, the evidence before the court clearly shows that the case against the defendant has been proved beyond every reasonable doubt on the two counts of obtaining the sum of N47, 575, 000.”

Consequently, Justice Dada declared the defendant guilty as charged on the two counts.

Her sentencing was, however, deferred in accordance with the Section 321 and 352 (5) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, in conjunction with Section 278 (1) of the ACJL 2015, "until when she is apprehended and brought before this court".

Tinubu Calls For Prayers, Thanksgiving To Mark 71st Birthday

To mark his 71st birthday, President-elect Asíwájú Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed that special prayers and thanksgiving service be held on Wednesday March 29, 2023, instead of the yearly birthday colloquium.

The special prayers will be held in Lagos and in other parts of the country.

A statement from his office on Monday indicated that for the main event in Lagos special prayers will be offered at the Central Mosque in each of the five divisions in the state including the Central Mosque, Alausa, Ikeja.

During the prayer sessions, special prayers will be offered for the peace, unity and progress of Nigeria.

Also to receive prayers among others are President Muhammadu Buhari and First Lady Aisha Buhari, President-elect Tinubu and his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Vice President-elect Senator Kashim Shettima and Hajia Nana Shettima, Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu, other state governors as well as members of National and State Houses of Assembly.

According to an announcement by the organisers of the prayer sessions issued by Imam Akeem Kosoko, the session at Alausa Central Mosque will begin at 10am on Wednesday and will include delivery of sermons and reading from the Holy Quran.

This year will be the third in recent times the birthday colloquium will not hold in deference to developments in the country.

In 2020, the 12th edition of the colloquium marking Asíwájú's 68th birthday was put off to empathize with those who lost their lives or affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

And last year, the birthday symposium was also called off by Asíwájú Tinubu right at the venue of the event when news emerged of the terror attack on the Abuja-Kaduna train in which several persons died and many others abducted.

The Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos venue was already filled to capacity with dignitaries to celebrate the birthday when Asíwájú took to the podium to announce the cancellation of the event.

The former Governor of Lagos had said it would not be proper for him as a statesman to be celebrating when such a tragedy had befallen the nation.

“For me to be here celebrating, dancing and enjoying myself, does not speak of me as a senior citizen of this country. I asked that the cleric should rather engage in prayers. This event should not be holding," Tinubu had said on the occasion.

This year, the president-elect said the date, which falls within the holy month of Ramadan, should be dedicated to prayers and seeking God's guidance for him and the country as he prepares to take the reins of leadership.

Why Gov. Seyi Makinde & I Are Very Close - Ex-Oyo First Lady, Yinka Ladoja Speaks On Her Political Journey

Former first lady of Oyo State, Alhaja Mutiat Yinka Ladoja has revealed the reasons behind her cordial relationship with the governor of the state, Engr. Seyi Makinde.

The Maye Iyalode of Ibadanland and wife of the former governor Rashidi Ladoja, Yinka Ladoja made these revelations while featuring on a radio programme in Ibadan.

Few days to the just concluded gubernatorial and house of assembly elections in the state, the former first lady was on Agidigbo 88.7 FM, Ibadan. Where she was able to address some partinent issues, especially the governor's purported 'hostile' body language towards the Islamic faith.

She wondered where the wild notion of governor Makinde's being anti Islam emanated from. Saying that she has known Makinde to be organizing Ramadan Lectures and sending people to Hajj for the past ten years. Even long before he became governor of Oyo State.

"How can a man who has been consistently organizing Ramadan Lectures at NTA in the last ten years be anti Islam. He wasn't even governor when he built Omituntun Mosque," she said.

Speaking further, Mrs. Ladoja also pointed out the fact that governor Seyi Makinde even has a Muslim background.

"He has a Muslim background. His grandfather from Aigbofa Compound of Oja'ba was a Muslim. It was his own father, late Pa Olatunbosun Makinde who converted to Christianity. In fact, his Muslim name is Saheed."

On why Makinde commands a lot of love and respect among the people of Oyo State.

"Governor Makinde, naturally, is so passionate, humble and kind. He is a philanthropist. And he has said it right from the onset that he wanted to serve. He made me understand that there is nothing in government that he can't afford. But he wants people to enjoy dividends of democracy. It's my joy that he has done all he promised to do. He will still do more in the Omituntun 2.0. I'm proud of him. He is a God sent to liberate the people of Oyo State."

According to Chief Yinka Ladoja, she is in the best position to know all these sterling qualities of governor Seyi Makinde since they have been close for about twenty one years now.

She said: " Seyi Makinde is the market I am selling. He's marketable because he is loved by the people of Oyo State. Our paths crossed in 2002 during electioneering period of that year. He was like an onlooker then with a group of about twelve men. The group was called Fortune Group. They were monitoring the happening within the political circle.

After the election, he went back to America where he was based then. It was in 2009 that he came back and started talking about going into politics. In 2011, I was one of those who followed him to his village, Ajia to launch his power project.

That was what actually attracted him to me. I was amazed because not many of his mates then would have ever thought of embarking on such project. I was also there when his father died in 2012. After the burial, when he wanted to go back to America he came to pay me a thank you visit. It was in the course of his visit that he overheard me taking to the doctor on the phone about a girl we wanted to provide an artificial legs for.

I was persuading the doctor to reduce the cost and all that. I never knew he was paying attention. But to my utmost shock, I saw Makinde's message a week after. He cleared the bill. The girl of that time is now a grown lady. She has her HND. In fact, she is currently observing a year mandatory service.

That and many others are the things that convinced me that we have many things in common. Since then it has been mother and son relationship for us.

When he wanted to contest in 2014, I told him I was not sure it was the right time but since it is your wish. I also told him that I know he would be governor one day. But that the particular time was what I didn't know. I have always know him to be very smart and intelligent."

When asked where she got her political skills from, Chief Yinka Ladoja has this to say. "I was born into politics. My mother was a great politician in Ibadan. She is from the popular Akintola Compound of Oke-Mapo. She was in the Action Group, alongside the likes of the first female senator of the Western Region, Mrs. Wuraola Esan and the late former Iyalode of Ibadanland, Alhaja Humuani Alaga.

I was young then but I used to follow my mother to their meetings at Mrs. Esan's place. They had meetings in our house as well. The likes of late former governor, Alhaji Lam Adesina knew me from my childhood.

In fact, my mother was one of the founders of Isabarudeen Girls School in 1958. Mrs Adio was the first Principal. So, I understand the political terrain of Oyo State like the palm of my hand. As a matter of fact I would have contested during the time of late Chief Bola Ige but I was pregnant then. After I gave birth, I didn't leave politics. I bought my first car during the era of Chief Bola Ige. He was my leader and mentor in politics.

I have known him right from my childhood. They were together with the late sage Chief Obafemi Awolowo and co. Bola Ige's home at Oke-Ado and Awolowo's home at Oke-Bola were like my second homes. I was eleven years old when I first entered Government House. The military governor then was General Adeyinka Adebayo. That was the first time I ate at the Government House in company of my mother."

It's An Attempt To Create Sociopolitical Unrest, Tinubu Support Group Tackles Iwuanyanwu Over Comments On Yorubas

Tinubu/Southwest Media Veterans Support Group has described the Chairman, Council of Elders of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu's comments on Yorubas as irresponsible and a deliberate attempt to create sociopolitical crisis.

The Group, in a statement tagged 'CHIEF IWUANYANWU'S PROVOCATIVE AND IRRESPONSIBLE OUTBURST' and signed by its Spokesperson, Femi Odere, urged the Yorubas to resist any attempt to be provoked because of what it described as a game plan to truncate democracy.

"Our attention has been drawn to the comments made by Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the Chairman, Council of Elders of Ohaneze Ndigbo in a video clip that has gone viral. Chief Iwuanyanwu made these comments on Saturday, March 25th at a ceremony in Anambra State where he was a special guest of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s one-year commemoration in office.

In the video, Chief Iwuanyanwu said, "I want our people in Lagos to know that on Wednesday, I called a meeting of the Ohaneze Council of Elders worldwide and we x-rayed the events in Lagos...We have resolved that never, never again can we allow anybody to take the life of an innocent Igbo person. All of us are going to fight the person. Never again. We are going to fight the person."

"We are in Nigeria. And we have invested in Nigeria. Our investments are so much. We are not going to take the pressure of people telling us to go. We are not going anywhere. And I want to tell those in Lagos to realize that there's no war between us and Yorubas. Yorubas are just political rascals. And we're going to handle them."

Although it is tempting to go toe-to-toe with Chief Iwuanyawu in what we believe was a deliberately made provocative, irresponsible, and condescending statement in our response, which would also have disparaged the entire Igbo people. But we won't.

We would have blamed Chief Iwuanyanwu's outburst on some cheap whiskey taken at the event where he made this negative, utterly annoying remarks. Or perhaps his morbidly obese body constitution could be the culprit as this might be affecting his capacity to think clearly and speak intelligently. But we wager that what happened at the Soludo event was another one of those predetermined, calculated attempts to draw the ire of the Yoruba people in order to create an unstable sociopolitical atmosphere in the polity to achieve their pathological fixation for an Interim government. We're too discerning to fall for that bait.

The invective of Chief Iwuanyanwu, and by extension, his Ohaneze Ndigbo clan against a people whose only sin is the fact that they are too loving and accommodating for their liking (because they lack these virtues) should be seen within the context of someone having a withdrawal symptom after working himself into a frenzy for so long that his candidate would win the recently concluded presidential election without any empirical and intelligent political permutations to justify his delusion.

We should therefore brace ourselves for more of this senseless and idiotic vituperation as the inauguration of President-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu draws closer.

We urge our people to resist any attempt to be provoked because their overarching game plan is to create a crisis atmosphere so that our democracy can be truncated. They know that their court case is wooly at best. Let us continue to take the insults and abuses from the likes of Chief Iwuanyanwu and his Igbo travelers while Asiwaju and his team concentrate on an inauguration that will usher in a new dawn of unprecedented accomplishments across the country as he did in Lagos, which gave them the platform for their much-touted and overdramatized investments, towards a more perfect nation." The statement reads.

The CJN On Wheelchair | By Festus Adedayo

If you are unlucky not to have a representative in the judicial council, even if you are innocent, you can be found guilty – B’eyan o l’eni ni’gbimo, bo ro’jo are, ebi lo mi a je.” This very profound saying of the Yoruba, translated into a pithy musical line in one of the tracks of Alhaji Ayinla Omowura, late Yoruba Apala musician, point unmistakably to the fact that corruption and favouritism predate colonialism in Africa. When you jointly read this line and D. O. Olagoke’s 1962-written play entitled The Incorruptible Judge, you will understand why it is almost an impossibility for Nigeria to operate an impartial and corrupt-free system.

Nigeria’s latest narration on corruption is the allegation that the 2023 election, especially the presidential election, was corruption-ridden. Three major Nigerian politicians, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Bola Tinubu jostled for the presidency in the February 25 election. At the end of the exercise, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner. Since then, his two opponents have inundated the system with complaints of vote-rigging. The most recent narrative in the back-and-forth allegations was a riveting story which claims that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kayode Ariwoola, had sneaked out of the country to hold a meeting with Tinubu. He was pictured on wheelchair. The purpose of the meeting, it was alleged, was to get Ariwoola to quash the gossamer of electoral corruption allegations against Tinubu.

If you go into historical exposes on corruption in Nigeria like Karl Maier’s This House Has Fallen or Stephen Ellis’ This Present Darkness, it may be difficult not to agree that the problem of corruption in Africa or Nigeria is genetic. In Maier’s is an audacious, brazen and disturbing report of how corruption and favouritism have destroyed the fabric of Nigeria, bellwether of Africa. Told with baffling statistics, you could smell putrid odour emitting from the lines of the book. It is a distressing story narrated with a depressing consistency. Ellis, on the other hand, traced the roots of Nigeria’s fraud-prone system to the immediate colonial era, plotting the graph to the present and why Nigeria is globally perceived as global headquarters of fraud.

With the definition of corruption as “an abuse of entrusted power for personal gains,” you will realize that Nigeria is roiling right inside a puddle of stench. It is glaring that it may even be difficult to acquit any Nigerian of corruption. This is because there is hardly any distinction between the public and private and their purses, as well as public and personal gains.

Since the exit of the colonialists in 1960, the structures of governance they left behind have proved incapable of withstanding the greater pre-colonial structure of corruption that they inherited. Hard as the British tried to battle the cankerworm with institutions of the police and the judiciary, not long after they left, corruption swam ashore with a baffling notoriety. The political class that took power from them was utterly reckless, showing open disdain for accountability and process.

It was the same story with the military who took over power from 1966. The Yakubu Gowon military government decorated the Dodan Barracks seat of power with maggots. Though generally perceived as incorrupt due to his austere lifestyle, Gowon was swamped all over by perceptibly corrupt people. His governors owned properties and assets that were far higher than their incomes. Indeed, it was estimated that, on the average, the governors owned commercial properties and farming estates of at least eight houses each, an amount that averaged between N49,000 to N120,000 by 1975 when Murtala Mohammed took over. Same 1975, a corruption scandal surrounding importation of cement called the Cement Armada erupted which engulfed many officials of the Ministry of Defence and the Central Bank of Nigeria. They were accused of falsifying ship manifestos and that many of them inflated figures of cements purchased.

To stave off this public perception, Gowon promulgated the Investigation of Assets Decree No. 37 of 1968, while frenetically engaging in the process of arresting the inexplicable post-war wealth of Nigerian soldiers, mostly accumulated during the three-year civil war. To achieve this, in 1973, Gowon appointed Alhaji Kam Salem to head the “X-Squad,” a fraud investigation arm of the Police, which unearthed many scandals within the Force.

In the July of this same 1974, buffeted on all fronts by the press, Gowon had to harangue his fellow Middle-Belter, Federal Communications Commissioner, Joseph Tarka, to resign from his position, after Godwin Daboh, allegedly in concert with Paul Unongo, accused Tarka of mind-blowing corruption. Tarka’s resignation was child’s play when placed side-by-side his snide comments, which indicated far more humongous corruption in the Gowon government. Tarka had said in a Daily Times newspaper interview, which revealed that he resigned under pressure, that “If I resign, it will set off a chain of reactions of various events, the end of which nobody could foretell.” This was followed by an affidavit sworn to on August 31, 1974 at the Jos High Court by Mr. Aper Aku, who was a known protégé of Tarka. The affidavit contained accusations against the Benue-Plateau Governor, Police Commissioner Joseph Gomwalk, of corruption. Gowon, in a state visit to China, publicly exonerated Gomwalk but public uproar against this police big gun seemed to have just begun afresh. He was eventually later executed by firing squad for his involvement in the 1976 Lt. Col Buka Suka Dimka coup against Murtala Mohammed.

In spite of this avalanche of corruption cases that involve the high and mighty and the lowly in Nigeria, if the Nigerian judicial system was above board, Nigeria would not be in the mess it found herself today. The judiciary has not fared better herself. The havoc that judicial corruption has wreaked havoc on its victims is remarkable and mind-boggling. For instance, in cases where litigants return from the court in utter repulsiveness and mental agony simply because the courts collected bribe and ensured a miscarriage of justice, one can imagine the distress such litigants go through. It is such that the chronicity of judicial corruption in Nigeria is taken for granted. Lawyers themselves know corrupt judges and can distinguish them from the sparse incorruptible ones. It is so rampant that finding a judicial officer who is above board is akin to seeking a virgin in a brothel.

Litigants pay bribes to agents of judges and magistrates, or even directly to registrars of courts if they wanted their cases to receive positive judicial attention. In Bori, Khanna local government area of Rivers State some years ago, a chief magistrate was arrested by the criminal investigation department (CID) upon tipoff. He had demanded bribe as condition to sign an accused bail bond. Marked money provided by the CID was then given to him and the magistrate was caught in the act. Land grabbers are also alleged to have specific judges who they give kickbacks and who give them favourable judgments in court. These are just a minuscule of judicial corruption cases that Nigeria is grappling with.

Election petition tribunals are where judicial corruption tied to politicians is most notorious. Under the guise of nocturne, judges collect kickbacks that run into billions of naira and millions of dollars to subvert the will of the people. In 2016, State Security Service (SSS) conducted multiple raids on residences of some senior Nigerian judges in Abuja, Port Harcourt, Gombe, Kano, Enugu and Sokoto. SSS said it did this consequent upon months of investigations where its secret police credibly got evidence that the affected judges were involved in questionable financial dealings. Documents linking some judges to estates that were worth over N1.5 billion were said to have been recovered, while in the residence of another, the sum of $400, 000 and N39 million in cash, in addition to documents of landed properties belonging to a federal judge, were retrieved. Ditto the residence of a federal judge in Port Harcourt who was believed to be in possession of $2 million.

So, when allegation that the current CJN, Ariwoola, was in dalliance with the president-elect to pervert justice in the matter against the APC candidate was spun, it seemed to synchronize with the now-becoming-familiar trend of corruption scandals of previous two CJNs. Though he eventually resigned his appointment, Justice Tanko Muhammed was subsumed in corruption allegations of mismanagement of funds leveled against him by 14 justices of the Supreme Court. Before him, CJN Walter Onnghen, who assumed that office in March 2017, got slammed with corruption charges too, specifically asset declaration offences. The Code of Conduct Tribunal claimed that it was only in 2016, after the controversial crackdown on judges, that the CJN declared his assets and it was partially done. He was also accused of failing to declare his assets in series of bank accounts which were denominated in local and foreign currencies at the Standard Chartered Bank branch in Abuja.

Then, Minister of State for Labour, Festus Keyamo, in a release issued yesterday, went off the handle. He claimed in the release that “some persons and groups who are desirous of truncating our democracy” because they were embittered that APC “was declared winner of the 2023 General Elections” and the “misguided individuals” were calling for “either the cancellation of the results or that the President-elect should not be inaugurated on the 29th of May, 2023.”  Keyamo said he found it perplexing “that those contesting the results want to be in the courts and on the streets at the same time.” He denounced these people who he referred to as “stoking the embers of hate, division and falsehoods” and like General Sani Abacha once warned NADECO, he bellowed “enough is enough” threatening that “we are not lacking in capabilities and capacities. Our silence should not be taken for cowardice.”

Pray, how can approaching the court and protesting peacefully amount to “truncating democracy”? It is on record that both methods were how Keyamo got his legal notoriety. If some people were convinced that their votes were stolen through one of the crudest electoral heists ever, don’t they have the right to approach the court for its resolution? What is wrong if they back it up with a peaceful protest? Who are the “we” that Keyamo is threatening to unleash – his ministry of labour, the yet-to-be-installed government or the police? Do these approximate the “we” of Keyamo?

If you add all antecedents and precedents of the CJN office, it is very tempting to pronounce Ariwoola as guilty as charged. The allegations are so salacious and riveting that it will be difficult not to agree with those leveling them. However, inconsistencies and inchoate ordering of the allegations are proving very damaging to the substance of the allegations. If you have ever been a victim of mob-lynching and the irreparable damage it has done to the names of personalities in the past who were later found to be innocent of allegations by Nigeria’s Roman mob, one would tarry awhile before queuing behind salacious allegations. This is more so when these pieces of “evidence” were ones that obviously lack substance, except their trolling contents.

In the thick of his despotic rule, I remember an allegation of monumental heist against the administration of military president, Ibrahim Babangida that shook it to its foundation. It was later found out to have been concocted. It was allegedly published in the May 1989 issue of American Ebony magazine. This revved students’ riots that month. Renowned educationist, columnist and critic, Tai Solarin, was the most available scapegoat and veritable object for deconstruction by the allegation. Pronto, Babangida’s security goons alleged that Solarin circulated the allegation. The SSS did two things. First, it got the publisher of Ebony to denounce such publication and to claim that Ebony had not published anything on Nigeria since 1977. Second, the SSS got an asthmatic Solarin to climb a multiple-storey building and immediately upon arrival, set him up for an NTA-covered interrogation. Panting and looking miserable, the interrogator was heard asking, “Dr. Solarin, if I was your student and I did what you just did, will you award me an A, B, C or F?” It spoke to getting concrete evidence before leveling allegations.

I will implore those leveling allegation of judicial corruption against Ariwoola for being in cahoots with those who wanted to judicially to subvert the people’s will to provide irrefutable evidence of this. Mindful that we may be throwing an innocent man under a bus, hefty allegations as this have to go beyond beer parlour gossips. They have to be concrete evidence. To provide, as the only credible evidence linking Ariwoola with bribe, that he, a man who those who know him claim limps, arrived or was about to board an aircraft, and was found to be on wheelchair, is very tepid and cannot stand rigour of scrutiny.

Nigeria must never allow electoral corruption to go into unholy mis-matrimony with judicial corruption. They also must never allow this marriage to influence the final decision of who is their president from May, 2023. It must however never be done by the martyrdom of an innocent man. Since those who gave the wheelchair evidence claim to have details of the meeting, why not provide them? For instance, CCTV evidence of Ariwoola’s arrival at the venue of the meeting; immigration arrival and departure evidence and more substantial tissues of evidence that we can use to crucify him?

Appeal Court Dismisses PDP’s Suit Against Tinubu, Shettima

The Court of Appeal, Abuja, Friday evening, dismissed an appeal by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), seeking the disqualification of Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and his deputy, Kassim Shettima, in the 25 February election.

A three-member panel headed by Justice James Abundaga, in a unanimous judgment, held that the PDP failed to establish that it had a legal basis (locus standi) to institute the case.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the PDP, in an appeal marked: CA/ABJ/CV/108/2023, had asked the appellate court to reverse the 13 January judgment delivered by Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court, Abuja which dismissed its suit on the grounds that the PDP lacked the legal basis to have instituted the suit. While the PDP was the appellant, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), APC, Messrs Tinubu and Shettima were respondents in the appeal.

The PDP had, in the suit filed on 28 July 2022, challenged the validity of the Tinubu/Shettima ticket for the

It argued that Mr Shettima’s nomination as the running mate was in breach of the provisions of Sections 29(1), 33, 35 and 84{1)}(2)} of the Electoral Act, 2022 (as amended), claiming that Mr Shettima had double nominations.

It claimed that as of the time Mr Shettima was nominated as a vice presidential candidate, he had not resigned nor withdrawn his nomination as candidate for the Borno Central senatorial poll.

The party argued that Mr Shettima’s nomination as a vice-presidential candidate, as well as the candidate for the Borno Central Senatorial seat, contravened the law.

The PDP, which sought an order disqualifying the APC, Mr Tinubu and Mr Shettima from contesting the presidential election scheduled for 25 February equally asked the court for an order nullifying their candidacy.

It further asked the court for an order compelling INEC to remove their names from its list of nominated or sponsored candidates eligible to contest the election.

The defendants, in their preliminary objection, urged the court to dismiss the suit for want of jurisdiction.

They contended that the plaintiff lacked the legal basis to institute the case, which invariably challenged APC’s decision and its nomination of candidates for the election, which were within the confines of the party’s internal affairs and thus, non-justiciable.

Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Abundaga, who agreed with the submissions of lawyers to the respondents, including Thomas Ojo of Lateef Fagbemi and Co, described the PDP as a busy body, who dabbled into issues that were internal affairs of the APC.

“Justice Abundaga held that the trial court was right to have held that the PDP failed to establish its legal basis.

The appellant, having failed to disclose its locus standi, this appeal fails and it is hereby dismissed,” he said and proceeded to affirm the judgment of the high court.

The judge also awarded N5 million cost against the appellant’s lawyer, J. O. Olotu.

2023 Guber Polls: God Has Vindicated You, Embrace All As Your Own - Mogaji Adanla Urges Makinde

A popular Ibadan based Islamic leader, the Turaki Adini of Oyo state and Wakil Faido Tijaniya of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta, Engr Abduljelyl Adekunle Karheem Mogaji Adanla has appealed to governor Seyi Makinde to forgive and forget about political events that preceded the just concluded governorship election in the state and embrace all.

The Turaki also stated that a man who is already vindicated by God has nothing to prove to men, also said Makinde only needs to continue on the path of equity, fairness and justice to all regardless of tribe or religion which has endeared him to the common man on the street and has translated to unprecedented and overwhelming electoral victory.

Mogaji Adanla made the disclosure in a press statement made available to journalists on Saturday morning in Ibadan, urging people in position of leadership to be well guided in their utterances so and teachings as their conducts and expressions carry weight that could impact on their followers negatively or positively.

Adanla, who made inferences to the Holy Quran maintained that the ways of God are not the ways of men stressing that regardless of any exalted position man may occupy, he should never play God who alone, can enthrone or dethrone any king as well as give power to whoever He pleases.

It was gathered that Adanla was reacting to a congratulatory message by the Chairman of Oyo State Muslim Community, Alhaji Kunle Sanni to Engr Seyi Makinde following the governor’s landslide victory at the just concluded election.

Prior to the governorship election, Alhaji Sanni had castigated governor Makinde severally while accusing the governor of being an anti Islam and implementing policies and programs that negate and violate rights of Muslims in the state, and consequently campaigned vigorously against the governor’s reelection.

Alhaji Sanni had specifically urged Muslims in the state to vote out Seyi Makinde who is a Christian and vote for another particular candidate who according to the cleric is a Muslim brother.

The position of Alhaji Sanni which was not acceptable to the generality of the Muslim community in the state considering what was described as Makinde’s humane and friendliness to the Muslim community saw different Islamic leaders and scholars including Mogaji Adanla warning against mixing up religion with politics and urging electorates to vote their consciences.

Adanla was quoted as saying in one of his press statements prior to the election as saying no governor in the history of the state has benefited the Muslim community more than Governor Makinde while making references to the the newly reconstructed state of the art Adogba mosque, Ibadan central mosque at Oja’ba and others under the Makinde led government.

In Adanla’s words: “The same people that openly campaigned against Engr Seyi Makinde using religion as a political tool to blackmail his government have humbled themselves enough to congratulate him on his victory.

“This is the sweetness of success and we’re very grateful to Almighty Allah that the good people of Oyo state are wiser and more politically conscious of events as affecting them directly to decide what is good or not for them as well as who their leaders should be.

“There’s no gainsaying that sovereign power in Oyo state has finally returned to the people as against the old order where the pecuniary interests of few are superimposed on the generality of the populace as collective interests. We will continue to get better as a people and I’m sure governor Seyi Makinde will do even much more than in his second term than his first.

“Alhamdulilahi the truth prevailed against falsehood. We forgive all those who tried to deploy divisive tools using religion as their baits. In the spirit of this Holy month of Ramadan we forgive you all.”

Osun: Oyetola Rejects Appeal Court Ruling, Sets To Pursue Case At Supreme Court

Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola, the former governor of Osun State, on Friday, said he and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) may appeal the decision of the Appeal Court at the Supreme Court.

Saying hat his faith in the judiciary was likewise unshaken in response to the Appeal Court ruling that reversed the Tribunal’s verdict that first resulted in the removal of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

A statement by the former governor's media aide, Ismail Omipidan, quoted Oyetola to have said that based on the judgment’s brief summary, there are good reasons to ask the Supreme Court for more relief.

He appealed to members and supporters of the APC to remain calm and not to be discouraged over the outcome of Friday’s appeal, saying his abiding faith in God to reclaim his mandate remains undoubted.

“We have heard the judgement of the Appeal Court, but we are yet to receive a copy of the judgement.

“However, from the snippets we are getting, we believe we have a potential ground to approach the Supreme Court. Our belief in the judiciary remains unshaken, just as my abiding faith in the God’s promise regarding the reclaim of my mandate remains undoubted.

“I, therefore, appeal to our supporters and party members to remain calm as we take the next step," the statement reads in part.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Friday set aside Tribunal judgement, thereby affirmed the election of Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the governor of Osun State.

A three-member panel of the appellate court led by Mohammed Shuaibu unanimously overturned the earlier decision of the election petition tribunal which nullified the governor’s victory in January.

The immediate-past governor of the state, Adegboyega Oyetola, who came second in the 16 July 2022 election, had filed a petition challenging Mr Adeleke’s victory.

The Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Osogbo, which upheld the allegation of over-voting in the areas won by Adeleke, had declared Mr Oyetola of the APC as winner of the poll after deducting “unlawful votes” from the PDP’s scores.

But Adeleke appealed against the lower court’s decision, urging the appellate court to set it aside and re-affirm his victory.

Makinde's Victory, Bola Ige's Failure-The Backbone & 'Frontbone'! | By 'Wole Oladapo

Chief Bola Ige, former governor of old Oyo state, despite his tremendous achievements and popularity, could not be reelected in 1983, as a result of the negative impact of the 'frontbone' activities. But, many have alluded the victory of the present Governor Seyi Makinde to his good service delivery!

All that Bola Ige and Seyi Makinde went through, at different  times, few months, weeks or days to their reelection bids, and  the failure or success, thereafter, despite their pragmatic approaches to good governance, were reflections of the duality of the natural/residual powers of the people, as the backbone and 'frontbone' of human successes and failures in this tumultuous world!

Anything that happens to human being, in life, is neither negative nor a curse- to the discerning minds- its always either a blessing or a lesson for the future. Hence, Governor Makinde's electoral victory was a blessing to the people of Oyo state, and a lesson to Governor Makinde on the need to be a little bit circumspect, often not to take his immediate political family/associates for granted, in terms  of their feelings, demands, advices, political expression and apprehension- in order to avoid...."Eni ti a ni kose to....to ni oun ko lee se to....to pada wa se tototooo, nigbagba" - ability to manage the human elements in humans.

While, at the national level, there is the need not to always be nonconformist to party's internal rules and collective decisions/interests- no matter the divergent views of one or few- so as not to rock the boat, in order to avoid the disastrous consequences, which many innocent PDP candidates were victims of, during the last 2023 general elections.

"Eniyan laso....Eniyan naa tun lee bo aso lara eniyan"- people can be one's backbones, and at another time can act as one's 'frontbone'- dissidents/albatrosses, despite one's goodwill, impact, and landmark, but manifestation  of the underground    circumstantial events- 'Fear people many times, before God' is the injunction,  and wise saying!

Unlike Chief Bola Ige, (1983), who, on the state radio/television, (BCOS), had asked the people; why the Gubernatorial electoral results turned so sour! Governor Makinde, in his case, was not immediately caught/consumed, in a jiffy, by the cobwebs of the human elements of his own undoing/actions. But the one week postponement of the Gubernatorial election, gave him the Special Grace and ample opportunities to run around, and make contacts for necessary interventions- physically, spiritually, politically, and financial wise- so as not to be consumed by  the 'frontbone' activities, occasioned by political intrigues/intricacies- using both the traditional and social media, which Makinde equally used to his best advantage, in order to win back, the support of his people - the backbone against the 'frontbone'- till the Thursday night of the electioneering campaigns deadline, indeed.

The two case studies of Chief Bola Ige and  Governor Seyi Makinde, in the contemporary Oyo State politics  of achievements, have really shown the constant denomination of the people, in different dynamics changes, as the most important pillars in the leadership support chain .

A GREAT LESSON TO  ALL, INDEED!

Appeal Court Sets Aside Tribunal Verdict, Upholds Adeleke's Electoral Victory

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, on Friday, set aside the judgement of the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal delivered on January 27, 2023, which had sacked Governor Ademola Adeleke from office.

The appeallate court gave the judgement in a 31-grounds of appeal filed by Adeleke.

Senator Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party had won the said election held on 16 July, 2022, but the result was nullified by the tribunal on the grounds of over-voting.

Consequently, a 3-man panel of the tribunal ordered Adeleke’s sack, and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to withdraw the certificate of return issued to him and issue a fresh one to Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress as the duly elected governor of Osun.

The tribunal held that Adeleke did not score the majority of lawful votes during the July 16 governorship election in the state.

Adeleke was declared the winner of the governorship poll held on July 16.

But not satisfied with the outcome of the poll, in August 2022, Oyetola, the former Osun governor and his party, the APC petitioned the tribunal to challenge the victory of Adeleke on the grounds that he did not qualify to contest the election and that there was over voting in 749 polling units across 10 local government areas of the state.

In the judgement, two out of the three-member panel of the tribunal held that Oyetola proved substantially that there was indeed over-voting in some of the polling units.

Delivering judgment, the appellate panel led by Justice Mohamed Lawal Shuaibu held that the tribunal erred on the side of the petitioner by not addressing the issue raised by Adeleke in his preliminary objection to Oyetola’s petition.

“On the whole, the appeal is meritorious and thereby allowed.

“The 1st and 2nd respondents shall pay cost of N500,000 each to the appellant, the panel held.

Her extradition was coordinated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, following a request by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI,  seeking assistance for her apprehension.

Investigations by the EFCC revealed that she had changed her name from Florence E. Onyegbu to Janet Boi in an attempt to remain hidden.

Onyegbu’s travails began after she was arrested on February 12, 2011 in the U.S. and subsequently sentenced to 46 months imprisonment, following a guilty plea , over the violation of the U.S. Law bordering on the offer and payment of illegal remuneration in a health care matter.

Although she was ordered to report for service of her sentence on April 4, 2011, she failed to surrender on that date.

Consequently, she was further charged with failure to surrender for service of sentence in violation of U.S. Law on March 4, 2013.

Conducting the naming ceremony by himself in the midst of traditional rulers, religious clerics, community leaders and well-wishers, Oluwo named the child Luwo, Adewumi, Sultana, Fatimoh, Grace.

PDP Suspends Fayose, Anyim, Others

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP on Thursday suspended former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose; former president of the Senate, Pius Anyim; Prof Dennis Ityavyar and Aslam Aliyu.

The suspension, which takes immediate effect, was arrived at after an extensive review of the affairs of the party, pursuant to the provisions of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).

The PDP also referred the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, to the National Disciplinary Committee over his reported involvement in anti-party activities.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the Party, Debo Ologunagba.

“The PDP urges all leaders, critical stakeholders and teeming members of our party across the country to remain united and focused at this critical time,” the statement added.

Fayose, while featuring on a tv program on Thursday, blamed stakeholders and politicians for a majority of the problems currently facing the country.

The former governor disclosed that there was a lot wrong with Nigeria, adding that nothing had changed in the country since 1979.

“There is a lot wrong with Nigeria. Since 1979, nothing has changed. I blamed the majority of the problems on the stakeholders and politicians.

“When you asked (Muhammadu) Buhari in 2015, If you lose the election, would you concede defeat?’ he said ‘I would win’. He never conceived he would lose.

“I told you the senators, House of Reps members are returning to the National Assembly. The system is sick. Nobody is protecting it.

“Rather than blame the Independent National Electoral Commission, we need to draw a red line like the army. Nothing was wrong in the elections,” he said.

Re-election Victory: Makinde Hosts Shina Peller, Accord Party Members

Oyo State governor, 'Seyi Makinde has stated that he will devote time to visit all zones of the state to appreciate residents for the confidence reposed in him as reflected in his unprecedented victory in 31 of the 33 local governments of the state.

The governor said this on Thursday, when he hosted the Oyo North Senatorial Candidate of the Accord Party, Hon. Shina Peller, who led members of the party to the Agodi Government House, Ibadan, to congratulate him on his re-election.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, indicated that the governor appreciated the members of the Accord Party and all residents of the state for their support in Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly election, assuring that efforts put into re-electing him would not be in vain.

The governor equally charged Peller and other National Assembly candidates who lost in the election not to lose hope and that those who won should not rest on their oars, as the validity of their victories will be tested before the National Assembly Election Tribunal.

He said: "I greet everyone seated here. I want to assure us that the efforts and support we have all put into the re-election victory won’t go in vain.

“When Hon. Shina Peller told me that you said you wanted to come and pay a thank-you and congratulatory visit to me, I told him that I should be the one to do that first. Be that as it may, I still have it in plan, and I have discussed it with the leaders of our party.

“In April, I will devote one week to tour all our zones to thank our people for their show of support, and I will use the same opportunity to visit you too.

“After the presidential election, some of us realigned forces because we knew we needed to do that to complete our ongoing projects, which are at 60, 70 per cent level.

“We know that if there is no continuity in government, you cannot guarantee the fact that they will not abandon all these projects, because we have discovered that change of government is the principal cause of abandoned projects.

“So, I want to thank you for listening to us and your leader, and to add, at this point, that all of those who have worked tirelessly for this victory will be rewarded. I don’t want to say much now until I visit our different localities to address you one after the other.

“Finally, don’t let us relax and be downcast because of what occurred during the presidential/NASS election – How we lost the three seats to APC candidates. It happened like that because the elections held the same day. So, the candidates rode on the popularity of the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu.

“But some of the people that thought they emerged have not, most especially the Senatorial and House of Representatives candidates. "So, be patient as we look unto God, who we know will perfect everything for us.”

Earlier, Hon. Shina Peller, had told the governor that the  purpose of the visit was to congratulate him on his victory, reiterating that the governor has done very well for the people of Oke Ogun zone.

He added that their choice to support Makinde was because he and his people “are not blinded by political party affiliation or religion” and that they were driven by the interest to see the governor complete the good works he has been doing in the state.

He said: “Concerning the past election, the will of the people has been done. The people must understand the fact that God created our land with so many resources, which are not yielding any good result because of bad leadership.

“We only have a time to address that leadership failure, which is election period and the 2023 general election was critical to us as Nigerians, to elect credible leaders, not just by political parties.

“You will agree with me that the political atmosphere has changed. People now follow personalities and not political parties, and that is the foundation of why we are here today.

“We have been able to see beyond political lines. We can see what the governor is doing, yet we don’t want to be blinded by political party or religious interest but the interest of the people, which we feel is the most important thing in politics.”

Speaking on whether or not he has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the House of Representatives member said he remained in Accord Party, but could say that Governor Makinde is his leader.

“Concerning defection, I came in purposely to protect the interest of my people. I am a member of the Accord Party today, but nobody knows what tomorrow holds. What I can say is that Governor Makinde is my leader.

“I left the APC purposely because the people of Oke-Ogun were short-changed and my people said to me that we needed to fight it out by aligning with a political party.

“That was how we found ourselves in Accord. By and large, we decided to follow Governor Makinde because of what he has done in Oke-Ogun, which no governor has ever done in the past.

“An example is the LAUTECH Campus in Iseyin. We have clamoured for a higher institution for years and many politicians have promised us and failed. But Governor Makinde has done that for us.

“So, if such a personality is going for second term, I believe I should support him despite being a member of another political party.

“We need to be able to rise above these biases, and that is why I will continue to be there for my people. I have a leader in Governor Makinde and what I have done within the last two weeks is because I believe in him and we share the same core ideology. I can assure you that I will always queue behind him,” Peller added.

Ramadan: Makinde Felicitates Muslim Faithful, Calls For More Prayers For State, Nigeria

Oyo State governor,'Seyi Makinde, has felicitated Muslims in the state and across the country on the commencement of the holy month of Ramadan.

The governor urged the Muslim faithful to use the opportunity of the holy month to pray relentlessly for Oyo State and Nigeria and the leadership at all levels.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, indicated that the governor equally admonished Muslims to imbibe the teachings contained in the Holy Quran regarding the blessed month, including showing kindness and generosity.

According to the governor, the month of Ramadan is a period of spiritual uplift and complete devotion to Allah, adding that Muslims should take full advantage of the holy month to strengthen their commitment to Allah and their service to humanity.

He said: “I congratulate Muslim faithful in Oyo State and around the globe for witnessing yet another blessed month of Ramadan. We thank Allah (SWT), who has made this possible.

“Ramadan is a period of complete devotion to Allah (SWT) and I urge my Muslim brothers and sisters to take full advantage of the period to strengthen their commitment to Allah (SWT) and their service to humanity.

“They must endeavour to increase in the acts of kindness and generosity by showing love and extending hands of support to the poor and the needy, as it was the practice of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

“I pray to Allah to accept all your acts of worship in this blessed month and reward us all abundantly.

“Ramadan Kareem.”

Ekweremadu, Wife, Doctor Found Guilty Of Organ Trafficking

Former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu; his wife Beatrice; and their doctor, Obinna Obeta have been found guilty of organ trafficking in the first verdict of its kind under the Modern Slavery Act.

Ekweremadu, 60; his wife, Beatrice, 56; and Dr Obinna Obeta, 51, were found guilty of facilitating the travel of a young man to Britain with a view to his exploitation after a six-week trial at the Old Bailey.

They criminally conspired to bring the 21-year-old Lagos street trader to London to exploit him for his kidney, the jury found, according to UK Guardian.

The prosecutor Hugh Davies KC told the court the Ekweremadus and Obeta had treated the man and other potential donors as “disposable assets – spare parts for reward”. He said they entered an “emotionally cold commercial transaction” with the man.

The behaviour of Ekweremadu, a successful lawyer and founder of an anti-poverty charity who helped draw up Nigeria’s laws against organ trafficking, showed “entitlement, dishonesty and hypocrisy”, Davies told the jury.

He said Ekweremadu, who owns several properties and had a staff of 80, “agreed to reward someone for a kidney for his daughter – somebody in circumstances of poverty and from whom he distanced himself and made no inquiries, and with whom, for his own political protection, he wanted no direct contact”.

Davies added, “What he agreed to do was not simply expedient in the clinical interests of his daughter, Sonia, it was exploitation, it was criminal. It is no defence to say he acted out of love for his daughter. Her clinical needs cannot come at the expense of the exploitation of somebody in poverty.”

Ekweremadu, who denied the charge, told the court he was the victim of a scam. Obeta, who also denied the charge, claimed the man was not offered a reward for his kidney and was acting altruistically. Beatrice denied any knowledge of the alleged conspiracy. Sonia did not give evidence.

The judge, Mr Justice Jeremy Johnson, will pass sentence at a later date.
