NNPCL confirms new PMS pump price regime, charges Nigerians to prepare for tougher times

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has confirmed a new price regime for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), so Nigerians should prepare for tougher times.

The revised pricing structure was verified by NNPCL in a release from its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Garba Deen Muhammad, dated May 31, 2023.
It was claimed in the press release titled "Adjustment In Pump Price Of PMS" that the change in the price of petrol at the pump was consistent with the status of the market at the time.

The NNPCL stated that prices "will continue to fluctuate in order to reflect market dynamics" and was unable to guarantee the stability of the new price regime for PMS.

However, it pledged to make every effort to deliver high-quality service and continuous supply to petroleum product end users.

“NNPC Limited wishes to inform our esteemed customers that we have adjusted our pump prices of PMS across our retail outlets, in line with current market realities.

“As we strive to provide you with the quality service for which we are known, it is pertinent to note that prices will continue to fluctuate to reflect market dynamics.

“We assure you that NNPC Limited is committed to ensuring a ceaseless supply of products.

“The company sincerely regrets any inconvenience this development may have caused.

“We greatly appreciate your continued patronage, support, and understanding during this time of change and growth,” NNPCL stated in the release.

Following President Bola Tinubu's declaration that the fuel subsidy has been eliminated during his inauguration on Monday, there has been a sudden shortage of petrol in numerous areas of the nation.

Since then, drivers have had trouble getting petrol, despite some filling stations raising the price at the pump to as much as N650 per litre.

The quick increase was contrary to the earlier expectation that the oil subsidy reduction would take effect by the end of June.

In the midst of the controversies, Nigerians woke up on Wednesday morning only to learn that the NNPCL had jerked up pump prices of petrol (PMS) by over 200 per cent.

The latest increment brought the pump price to between N488 and N577 per litre, with Lagos State having the lowest price, while Borno and Yobe states would be selling at N557 per litre.

This was a sharp increase from the old pump price regime of between N189 per litre and N199 per litre across the states before the removal of subsidy.

If the new pricing template, purportedly sent by the NNPCL Management to marketers is anything to go by, the new price regime takes effect from today.

As contained in the template, the new price regime per litre, across the states, effective from today, 31 May, 2023, is as follows:

Lagos: ₦488; FCT Abuja: ₦537; Abia: ₦515; Adamawa: ₦550; Akwa Ibom: ₦515; Anambra: ₦520; Bauchi: ₦550; Bayelsa: ₦515; Benue: ₦537; Borno: ₦557; Cross River: ₦511; Delta: ₦511; Edo: ₦511; Ekiti: ₦500; Enugu: ₦520; Ebonyi: ₦520; Gombe: ₦550; Imo: ₦515; Jigawa: ₦540; Kaduna: ₦540; Kano: ₦540; Katsina: ₦540; Kebbi: ₦545; Kogi: ₦537; Kwara: ₦515; Nasarawa: N537; Niger: ₦537; Ogun: ₦500; Ondo: ₦500; Osun: ₦500 per litre; Oyo: ₦500! Plateau: ₦537; Rivers: ₦511; Sokoto: ₦540; Taraba: ₦550! Yobe: ₦557! and Zamfara: ₦540 per litre.

EFCC laments over siege on Lagos office by DSS, describes the development as shocking

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has described the blockage of its Lagos office by the Department of State Services (DSS) as shocking.

DSS on Tuesday morning barricaded entrance of No.15 Awolowo Road, Ikoyi office of the anti-graft agency with armQoured personnel carriers. Thereby denying officials of the Commission entry into the premises.
Responding to the incidence EFCC described the development as shocking giving the fact that the Commission has cohabited with the DSS in that facility for 20 years without incident.

"By denying operatives access to their offices, the Commission’s operations at its largest hub with over 500 personnel, hundreds of exhibits, and many suspects in detention have been disrupted.

"Cases scheduled for court hearing today have been aborted, while many suspects who had been invited for questioning are left unattended.

"Even more alarming is that suspects in detention are left without care with grave implications for their rights as inmates.

"All of these have wilder implications for the nation’s fight against economic and financial crimes.

"The siege is inconsistent with the synergy expected of agencies working for the same government and nation, especially when there are ongoing discussions on the matter," the Commission's statement reads in part.

Supreme court dismisses PDP's suit against Tinubu, Shettima over double nomination

The supreme court has dismissed the suit seeking the disqualification of Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima as presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

A five-member panel of the supreme court, led by Justice Adamu Jauro, on Friday, May 26, held that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lacked the locus standi to institute the suit.

Justice Jauro added that the main opposition party acted as meddlesome interloper and a busy body in the case.
It is pertinent to note that the PDP claimed that Shettima's nomination as Tinubu's running mate was in breach of the provisions of sections 29(1), 33, 35, and 84(1)(2) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

The opposition party argued that Shettima's nomination to contest the position of vice- president and Borno central senatorial seat, at same time, contravened the law.

Why I’m not worried about Tinubu’s swearing-in on May 29 - Atiku

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president and PDP candidate, said on Tuesday he wasn't concerned that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu would be sworn in as president on May 29 before petitions to overturn his election results are resolved.

Atiku expressed optimism that he would successfully defend his election in court despite the fact that he is now contesting Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the legitimate victor of the presidential election that took place on February 25.
Speaking through his lead attorney, Chief Chris Uche, SAN, not long after the Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC, in Abuja, consolidated his petition with those filed by candidates for the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, and the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, Atiku, Tinubu insisted that the court has the authority to remove him from office even after the oath of office.

The PDP candidate, through his legal team, stated: "I have been asked about May 29, I want to assure people that swearing in is only a ceremony that does not in any way tie the hands of the court. Full hearing on the three merged petitions will begin on May 30, a day after Tinubu's inauguration as President.
“The taking of oath binds the person who takes the oath and not the court

“The court has given you its timelines for parties to present their case. We are happy that with the development, the petitions will be expeditiously determined, ” Atiku’s lawyer, Uche, SAN, added.

It would be recalled that the five-member panel, led by Justice Haruna Tsammani, approved Atiku's request to use three weeks to present evidence before the court through 100 witnesses on Tuesday during the presentation of the panel's pre-hearing report.

In his joint petition with the PDP, titled CA/PEPC/05/2023, Atiku argued that Tinubu's declaration as the election's victor was "invalid due to non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022."

He said that Tinubu's election was illegitimate because of fraud.

Aside from praying the court to declare him winner of the presidential election, having secured the second highest number of votes cast, Atiku and the PDP, applied for the withdrawal of the Certificate of Return that was already issued to Tinubu by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

As the petitions seeking to void his election victory are heard, President-elect Tinubu has prohibited members of his legal team from speaking to reporters.

After the panel hinted that it might forbid both attorneys and members of the public from entering the courtroom with their mobile phones and other electronic devices, Chief Niyi Akintola, SAN, the lead attorney who represented the APC at the resumed proceedings on Tuesday, made the disclosure in open court.

The decision, according to Justice Tsammani, was made in order to maintain the dignity of the proceedings and to improve security inside the courtroom.

Responding, Chief Akintola, SAN, said: “My lords, that is why those of us that are representing the 2nd and 3rd respondents (Tinubu and APC), are acting on strict instructions.

“We have taken a decision not to talk to the press. We have 38 SANs in our team and my lords, in fact, the penalty for anyone that goes against the instruction and speaks to the press after every proceeding, is expulsion from the team,” he added.

Court adjourns Seun Kuti’s case as Magistrate fails to attend sitting

The trial of Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has been postponed to Wednesday in the Chief Magistrates Court in Yaba, Lagos State, presided over by Adeola Olatubosun.

After the magistrate excused herself from court, SaharaReporters was informed that the meeting could not proceed.

“Seun has been taken back to the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti,” a source at the court said.
“The court sitting has been adjourned till tomorrow; the magistrate is not around.”

SaharaReporters on Monday reported that the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State command, was plotting to ensure that Kuti was taken to the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, to certify that he is “mentally sick.”

Prior to the leadership convincing the magistrate to change her decision and comply with their wishes, SaharaReporters had claimed that Seun Kuti had refused to provide blood samples to the police for medical testing.

The Afrobeat musician is being taken by the police to the Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State in an effort to have him diagnosed with mental illness. Imagine the damage it may do to his musical career both in Nigeria and overseas, a source claimed on Monday.

According to the documents attached, the application was moved by Simon Lough (SAN), who led a police legal team to court.

He said, “The extension is to allow further investigation into the case. We could not conclude investigation in 2 days, we now ask for extra 4 days to enable us to conclude the investigation.”

EFCC re-arraigns businesswoman for alleged N57.6m fraud in Lagos

The Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday, May 22, re-arraigned one Oluremi Phillips for an alleged N57, 690,000 fraud before Justice I.O. Ijelu of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja.

Philips was previously standing trial before Justice S.O. Solebo of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, following her arraignment on January 27, 2022.

However, the trial could not be concluded before the retirement of Justice Solebo in November 2022, a development that resulted in the re-assigning of the case file to Justice Ijelu.

Philips was re-arraigned alongside her company, Omritas Energy Limited, on a five-count charge bordering on stealing and issuance of dud cheques to the tune of N57, 690,000.

The defendant, again, pleaded "not guilty" to all the counts preferred against her.

In view of her plea, the prosecution counsel, T.J. Banjo, asked the Court for a trial date and further prayed the Judge to order the remand of the defendant, who also represents the second defendant, at a Correctional Centre, pending the trial date.

The defence counsel, Akin Olatunji, however, informed the court that his client had been granted bail on March 18, 2022 while standing trial before Justice Solebo.

"We were able, after two months that the defendant was at the Correctional Centre, to perfect the bail.

“We, therefore, humbly urge your lordship to allow the defendant to continue with the previous bail, as she does not constitute a flight-risk," he said.

The prosecution counsel, however, raised objections, noting that "Your lordship now sits on the matter. The defendant has not brought any bail application before the court, and the court is a court of records."

After listening to the arguments of both parties, and going through the records of the proceedings of the previous court, including the bail ruling of retired Justice Solebo, the trial judge granted the defendant bail.

The Judge held that "I am satisfied that the conditions are adequate.

"The bail conditions are hereby adopted by this court.

“The bail conditions, having been perfected by the defendant… the first defendant shall continue to enjoy same before this court," he said.

The case was adjourned till June 28 and 29, 2023 and July 4, 2023 for trial.

'He was paid over N300,000', Tunde Kelani replies Baba Wande over fraud allegation on 'Ti Oluwa Nile'

Tunde Kelani, a popular Nigerian firmmaker, has responded to his colleague, Kareem Adepoju (Baba Wande) over a fraud allegation raised against his personality.

Baba Wande, in a recent interview, had accused Kelani of defrauding him over the returns from legendary Yoruba movie, ‘Ti Oluwa nile’ which was a big hit back in the day.

Responding to the allegation however, Kelani, the director of Saworoide and Agogo Ewo, said he never defrauded Baba Wande and that the film didn’t make as much money as some have reported.

He said; “He was not accusing me; I think he was stating his own case and complaining about a project that happened over 20 years ago.

"I think he is not saying that I didn’t pay him; he is probably saying that the money was not enough. When I heard that, I asked the office to start dusting some papers and I think they found some vouchers, at least we are still looking for 2003 record.

“But, the vouchers they found already showed that he was paid over N300,000 that time. You know the film has a short lifespan and I cannot understand why Baba Wande keeps harassing me over something that happened more than 20 years ago. If he thinks that the films are selling as he thinks, I can give him the right to produce, if that would solve the problem.

“It is painful that he didn’t even care whether we made our money from it or not. Even after all that experience, I took him to the Benin Republic to take part in Abeni and I always paid him whatever he demanded. Again, I invited him to play in Arugba. He doesn’t remember all those ones, but he can only remember bad things about me.

"In spite of the relative success of the 'Ti Oluwa Ni Ile' project, he doesn’t seem to see anything good in it and in me. It is very strange. I think it is a deliberate effort to blackmail me. I think he is broke, but I am broke too; we are all broke and that is the reality.

"This is why I refused to reply him instantly, because it won’t be good for the Yoruba race. I don’t know who is older; he would be probably older than me. I don’t expect him to be saying all that on the pages of a newspaper.

“I cannot do that, because I will be insulting the institutions of our traditional rulers and all eminent Nigerians. I think it is a very simple case that can be resolved. He is also not bothered what I went through when all my works, including the films were pirated. I almost died when it happened. It pains me a lot anytime Baba Wande refers to that issue. I have various pirated copies of my works in my Lagos office. I would say that he is entitled to his opinion on the things he said about me.

“Meanwhile, I have not said anything bad about him; not to talk of doing it in the public. There is nothing to settle; if people are interested, fine, not me. I have many challenges. I am pained because all my films have been pirated. He could not imagine what happened to me.”

UK to ban Nigerian students, others from bringing family over

The UK is about to reveal new limitations that would likely prevent students from Nigeria and other countries studying in the UK from bringing their family with them.

The announcement of this crackdown will be made this week, according to an exclusive report by The Sun UK.

All master's students and many other post-graduates will be prohibited from inviting family members over as a result of the crackdown.

Although PhD students' studies often run between three and five years and need a high level of skill, the prohibition will not apply to them, according to the UK Media House.

This follows the reports that net migration into the UK has skyrocketed to 1 million with Tory MPs asking the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, “to get a grip on the rocketing numbers.”

To get a hold of the climbing numbers, UK ministers are said to be expected to announce the immigration clampdown on Tuesday or Wednesday.

The Sun reports that “Rishi Sunak is expected to come out fighting on immigration – pointing out they are figures he inherited as they date back to the year ending December 2022 – two months after he became PM.

“There has been an explosion in the number of people coming to Britain piggybacking on their relative’s student visa.

“Students brought 135,788 family members to Britain last year – nine times more than in 2019.

“Last year, 59,053 Nigerian students brought over 60,923 relatives. We have got to get a grip,” a Tory MP told The Sun on Sunday.

UK ministers are reportedly planning to unveil the immigration crackdown on Tuesday or Wednesday in an effort to stem the tide of rising numbers.

According to The Sun, "Rishi Sunak is anticipated to come out fighting on immigration, pointing out that these are numbers he inherited as they go back to the year ending in December 2022, two months after he was elected prime minister.

"The number of persons using their family member's student visa to enter Britain has skyrocketed.

"Students brought 135,788 family members to Britain in 2018—nine times more than in 2019—and this trend continues in 2019.

"Over 60,923 relatives were brought by 59,053 Nigerian students last year. We must gain control, a Tory MP said on Sunday to The Sun.

Popular Ondo prince, Soji Adesida for burial May 26

Soji Adesida, a popular Ondo born prince, would be buried on Friday 26 May, 2023.

The former Assistant Governor of Ibadan Rotary Club passed away 28 April, 2023. He was aged 65.

Adesida was allegedly pushed to death by a member of the Oodua People's Congress (OPC) while trying to settle a dispute between the vigilante man and his girlfriend.

The sad incident, according to report, occured at a funeral in Akure, the capital city of Ondo state.
Rafiu Akinwale, the OPC member, who also came to the funeral, was reportedly beating his girlfriend over an accusation that she was exchanging phone numbers with another man.

It was gathered that an attempt by Adesida to prevent Akinwale from beating the girlfriend did not go down well with the OPC member, who out of anger, reportedly pushed the prince.

He was said to have slumped and later confirmed dead at the hospital he was rushed to.

Adesida, popularly known as Stag in his lifetime, was a pastor and a businessman. He was into supply of agricultural equipment.

Lamidi Apapa’s missing cap | By Festus Adedayo

Turbulent anger of Obidients landed on Lamidi Apapa last week. By the time their anger petered out, Apapa had lost his cap to a God-knows-who. Esu Elegbara, the trickster deity of the Yoruba people, it will seem, lives in caps. Though most of the exploits of Esu exist in myths, Yoruba constructed a pantheon of beliefs that implicate the Esu as divisive and full of tricks. One of such, sauced in mythology, was translated into a very sobering track by ace Yoruba Awurebe musician, Alhaji Dauda Akanmu Adeeyo, popularly known as Dauda Epo Akara. Famous for his anecdotal offerings affixed to virtually all his songs, Adeeyo got this sobriquet, for which he was more known by than his actual name, while he was a pupil in primary school. His uniforms were always soaked in bean cake oil called Epo Akara.

The Ibadan maestro entitled the track under reference Itan Ore Meji – the tale of two friends – in a parent album he called My Mother. Like Epo Akara, in 1987, Donald Cosentino, a lecturer in the Folklore and Mythology Programme of the University of California, Los Angeles, wrote an article for The Journal of American Folklore which he entitled Who Is That Fellow in the Many-Colored Cap? Transformations of Eshu in Old and New World Mythologies (Vol. 100, No. 397. Jul. - Sep., 1987). In it, he also situated the Esu as author of dissent, “an exponent of ceaseless rearrangements” and a dissembler. Esu, said Cosentino, is a counterpart to Ifa, who the Yoruba see as the Lord of Divination and through whom sacrifices and propitiations are made to God for peace in the world.

Epo Akara and Cosentino’s narratives are not dissimilar. The two of them began this folklore thus: There existed two friends who were so fond of each other and inseparable. They were objects of discussions by the whole village. In fact, sang Epo Akara, won ki ja, won kii ta – they never had a word of disagreement since they began their friendship from their infancy. So, one day, Esu swore to cause irreparable discord between them. The object he cast for that dissention was a cap. So the Esu sowed a multicolored cap, something in the mould of Dolly Parton’s coat of many colours. The colours, says Cosentino, have been “variously described as red and white; red, white and blue; or red, white, green, and black.”

Epo Akara, however, put the colours of the cap as white and black. So the Esu transformed himself into an irresistibly dressed, handsome young man in dainty Aso Oke and Sanyan cap. As the two friends sat in a foyer chattering, Esu walked between them and in the words of Cosentino, “put his pipe at the nape of his neck and hung his staff over his back.” As Esu walked past the two friends, in the rendering of the Awurebe musician, the first friend called the attention of his pal to the cap, which he said was black. Once he had money, the friend remarked, it would be his delight to buy it – bi mo ri’ru e, ma ra’kan, Balarabi, Wali Muhanmonda. The friend fired back, insisting that the cap was white and insulted the other friend by asking if he was blind – ab’oju re o ri’ran? Then, a very deadly brawl ensued between the duo as they came to blows.

While Epo Akara insisted that, having achieved his dissembling aim, Esu transformed himself into who he was and settled the quarrel, Consentino argued that the tiff came to a halt when the disputants were brought to court. In court, the scholar said, Esu confessed to his trick, boasting that "sowing dissension is my great delight." In the rendering of the Folklore and Mythology scholar, Esu then fled. As he fled, Esu lit fire along the way, mixing up all the possessions of fleeing townsfolk. He also tested and exposed friendships along the way, thereby creating and destroying wealth. He then laughed at the ignorance of the people about his innate destructive nature.

Nigeria’s Labour Party, (LP) it will seem, is where Esu Elegbara has made his temporary home now. Last week, the party’s internal tiff reached a cancerous level at the Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja. In the glare of the whole world, the timely intervention of police officers prevented miffed supporters of Peter Obi from skewering the flesh of the party’s Acting National Chairman, Apapa. Apapa and Julius Abure, hitherto suspended national chairman of the party, were embroiled in a leadership tussle. This led to blood-baiting hounds, suspected to be sympathetic to the Abure faction of the party, pouncing on Apapa. The wolves had prevented Apapa from addressing the press and shoved him dangerously off television cameras. In the process, one of them took off Apapa’s cap. He later took possession of it.

Speaking at a press conference after the attack, the 73-year old Apapa rained curses on the person who removed his cap. He had said: "My cap is here as you can see it. It was not burnt, and the boy who removed my cap will suffer it in his life. I saw him, he's a young chap. He'll never grow old by God's grace. He deserves it, you know why? I didn't use cutlass on him."

Were Apapa’s curses of Janus colour and texture as that of Adedara Arunralojaoba, Ijesaland’s – domiciled in Osun State – most evocative musician who sang Adamo music during his lifetime? Janus, you know, is the Egyptian binary god with two faces.  Some installments away, I narrated this Adamo musician’s encounter with another musician, Ayinla Omowura, in Ilesa in the 1970s. Omowura’s drums began to get torn in subsequence as he set out to sing at a live gig where he and Adedara had been invited. In the words of Arunralojaoba, on arriving the bandstand to take over the evening belt of entertainment of invited audience, Omowura had been drunk to stupor with his assumed musical superiority. Speaking to Dele Adeyanju, a renowned broadcaster, in an interview, the Adamo musician had attributed the torn drums to God fighting his battle for him and not any traditional African spiritual attack. Adedara was known to have at one time been a member of the Ogboni fraternity. So, were the torn drums God’s own way of fighting for Adedara against his adversary, or the scenario was a product of metaphysical invocation?

The removal of Apapa’s cap reminds me of the same violence and indignity suffered by Chief Bola Ige, ex-governor of old Oyo State, in the hands of sponsored miscreants like those hooligans in the LP. It was at the height of the intra-party sabre-rattling of the Alliance for Democracy (AD). At a ceremony held on Saturday December 15, 2001 where Olusegun Obasanjo’s late wife, Stella, was conferred with a chieftaincy title by the Ooni of Ife, wolves suspected to be in the herd of Iyiola Omisore, erstwhile Deputy Governor of Osun State, pounced on Ige in similar cavalier but blood-baiting manner Apapa was to witness almost 22 years after. They seized the cap of the man, known as Arole Awolowo – Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s heir – caps which, unlike Apapa’s, he was never to set eyes upon again.

Five days before this, an attempt to impeach Omisore was held at the Osun State House of Assembly. Odunayo Olagbaju, believed to be one of Omisore’s Rottweilers, was at the forefront of the disruption of the impeachment proceedings. Allegations were rife that Olagbaju was also the coordinator of the violent seizure of Ige’s cap. Four days after the attack on Ige, Olagbaju was mysteriously assassinated in Ile-Ife. Exactly four days after Olagbaju’s assassination, Ige was also taken out in what appeared like cult-like revenge killings. Today, Omisore is Southwest progressives’ highest-ranking national official, representing the Yorubaland which venerated Ige as an avatar.

Beyond their ethno-cultural implications as significant aspect of dressing and fashion, caps also have mythic qualities among the Yoruba especially. Aside caps’ aesthetic and symbolic elaboration of the body, they are also seen as weapon in the hands of Esu. The cap perhaps gained that relevance due to the renowned place that the head has in African epistemology. The head receives special aesthetic attention as a result of its spiritual and biological importance. Among the Yoruba, the head, called Ori, is a site of spiritual intuition and destiny. It is as well a harbinger of a man’s reflective spark of human consciousness. It is an Orisa, or god, of its own and is not only venerated but worshipped. To acquire a balanced character – iwa-pele – the Yoruba believe that the individual, working in tandem with this Orisa, can achieve this desirable personality. When he does, the individual then receives an alignment with his Ori, the divine self. People whose destinies are skewed are advised to worship their Ori whose variant among the Igbo is chi. So, when a cap, the decorative ornament of the head, is rudely removed as was done to Ige and Apapa, Yoruba see it as bad omen, symbolizing a rude yank-off of the human person.

Immediately after the seizure of Ige’s cap, some knowledgeable elders in sorcery and witchcraft opined that there existed causality between the cap’s removal and his eventual killing. For a people who use metaphysics as human agency to explain what the common eyes cannot penetrate, when Ige eventually died, the narrative of the connect between the removed cap and his death took front burner. So, in the seizure of Apapa’s cap, was Esu Elegbara on the usual roller-coaster of his famous trickster prowess, or does the act just symbolize a fatality to either Apapa, the Labour Party or the boy who bit the bullet by removing the cap?

The chief accusation against Apapa is that he is the Esu Elegbara in the Labour Party who this destructive god lent his heart for a fee. As Epo Akara and Cosentino narrated in their works, could Apapa be the modern or Nigeria’s political party version of the trickster deity, who is sowing dissention in the party? Ask those who are ranged against him to explain why, they will tell you that Apapa has received humongous bribe from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to act as the Judas within the party. On an Arise television interview last week, Apapa asked those who leveled such allegations to provide evidence. Again, in his insular trickery, I saw Esu Elegbara laughing rambunctiously. Do those who give bribes leave traces? Should those who also leveled such allegation against this old man sincerely do this without providing evidence? Are they themselves the Esu, being on the payroll of Abure, to ensure that Apapa is fought to a standstill?

Precedent is however on the side of those who accuse Apapa of acting the script of the APC. Nigerian politics is so enmeshed in indignity and amorality that virtually all those who engage in it possess scarred souls like the devil’s. They even tell you that politics and morality are in perpetual enmity. If you observe, the highest fusillade of attacks, both judicial and verbal, from the APC to any party, is towards the Labour Party. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its commissars receive scant attention of that party. It must believe that that party is already mortally wounded. APC, peopled by a commune of scavengers, vultures and deadly hit-men, will logically rent an Apapa for a dissembling assignment. It is because the If I must hanker a guess, it must be because the LP poses the greatest social threat to the legitimacy that APC needs, not necessarily during the current judicial process but after it. Thus, employing an Esu Elegbara within the fold of the LP for this dirty job is a politically wise decision for a party whose men, in the name of politics, will kill their mother and rope their father for the murder without batting an eyelid.

Esu Elegbara seems to be on the trail of the Labour Party and is not relenting yet. At the tail end of last week, until the clarification given by the court, the Federal High Court in Kano was reported to have declared the votes polled by the Abia State governor-elect, Alex Otti, Labour Party’s only state governor in the last general election, as wasted. It however reportedly refrained from nullifying the certificate of return issued by INEC to the governor-elect. A newspaper later on published the clarification of the court, stating that it denied annulling the election of the governor-elect.

If you think it is only in LP that Esu Elegbara wrecks its havocs, you are mistaken. In the PDP, he began his life-sworn disruption and destruction, as they say, as a pre-election cancer. By the time Atiku Abubakar and his party realized that Esu was in cahoots with the party, Elegbara had destroyed all the cells within the body of the party, finally and permanently retiring the Adamawa-born politician from his serial quest for the Nigerian presidency.

Elegbara, it will seem, is on his way to the APC as we speak. From reports, the party is on its way to a political liaison with Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso, New Nigerian People’s Party (NPP’s) presidential candidate. President-elect, Bola Tinubu, was reported to have met the NPP boss for political talks in Paris last Monday. There is the need for enough senators to complete the circus of a pliable National Assembly. I imagine the mind of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Kano State governor, at the moment. The Nigerian politician, in pursuing his persuasion that politics and morality are not friends, devised what is labeled a “no permanent friends, no permanent foes” lexicographic feature of politics. But, must politicians be indistinguishable from serial adulterers? Esu Elegbara must be somewhere now, devising his next trickery. Will he wear Ganduje like an apparel?

EFCC reacts to Matawalle's $2m bribe allegation on chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reacted to $2m bribery allegation raised against its chairman, Abdulraeheed Bawa.

Bello Matawalle, the governor of Zamfara state, had earlier accused the chairman of the anti-graft agency of demanding two million dollars bribe from him.

He made the allegation during an interview with BBC Hausa on Friday, amid the ongoing rift between the governor and EFCC.

The anti-graft agency has however described Matawalle's claims as tactic of a drowning man.

"Matawalle's recourse to mudslinging is symptomatic of a drowning man clutching at straws. But despite the irritation of his phantom claims, the Commission will not be drawn into a mud fight with a suspect under its investigation for corruption and unconscionable pillage of the resources of his state.

"If Matawalle will be taken seriously, he should go beyond sabre-rattling by spilling the beans - provide concrete evidence as proof of his allegations.

"Again, the Commission wishes to alert the public about plans by some of the alleged corrupt politically exposed persons to flee the country ahead of May 29.

"The Commission is working in close collaboration with its international partners to frustrate these escape plans and bring those involved to justice," EFCC statement reads.

EFCC has said that Matawalle is under investigation for allegedly diverting N70billion meant for contracts in his state.

Abdulroheem Muideen Ajao, a self-aclaimed local drug producer, has been apprehended by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo state.

The regulatory agency also closed down Ajao's eight-room, ramshackle herbal hub that was located behind Periscope Model College, Muslim area of the ancient city.

Ajao, who produces illicit herbal goods, was arrested as a result of information the food and drug regulatory agency obtained.

Ajayi disclosed that as soon as the members of the Muslim Community hinted the agency of the nefarious act, the Surveillance Unit of the NAFDAC swung into action and apprehended the suspect to put an end to production of harmful and illicit drugs.

“The community here tipped our agency, made our surveillance for inspection. The aftermath of the visit shows that the environment for production is not hygienic, informed the director- general who is currently outside the country”, the director said.

The NAFDAC  director  pointed out that ignorance and illiteracy have been the background of wrong herbal drug processing in the country.

Speaking on the processes of registration, the Director said: “There are three processes to registration including documentation with payment, laboratory analysis and report for approval, but as I speak there is no application for registration at all with NAFDAC’.

Confessing to the act, Ajao,  the producer of  At-Taqwah Multipurpose Herbal Medicine and Oladem Multi-purpose Company Limited, stated that he was surprised to be nabbed  over alleged unhealthy production of herbal products.

The suspect noted that he had been operating in the area over five years, distributing successfully across the South western part of the country, including Lagos State, stressing that his products serve a cure to hypertension, fever, sex malfunctioning and other related diseases.

He said: ‘’We are producing herbal products. We distribute to Jos, Lagos and other parts of the country.  I have been in this business for about five years.  The name of the herbal product is At-Taqwah Herbal Product. So, it is working for fever, malaria, body pain and hypertension.

The suspect added that those who lent him the money are threatening him to return the money, saying  that was why he decided to start  manufacturing the product.

Autopsy reveals policeman starved, tortured to death in Kogi cell

Inspector Taiye Atobiloye, a police officer who passed away in a cell at the Kogi State Police Command's "D" Division, displayed signs of assault on his body and had also been starved to death, according to an autopsy that was performed on his remains.

According to the postmortem report, the deceased, who had hypertension, had been starved in the cell.

According to additional information on the occurrence, Atobiloye was a member of the Oke Onigbin Police Division in Kwara State. However, trouble for him began in April 2023 when he was transferred to Zone 12 in Kogi State for special duty but refused the order.

The deceased’s wife, Oluwabukola, said that when her husband’s efforts to stop the deployment failed, Atobiloye travelled to Kogi State to resume but, he was detained for late resumption at the ‘D’ Division.

Oluwabukola claimed that, after one week without anyone picking up the numerous calls she made to his telephone line, she heard from another person that, her husband had died inside a cell in ‘D’ Division.

When her husband's attempts to block the deployment were unsuccessful, the deceased's widow, Oluwabukola, claimed that Atobiloye traveled to Kogi State to continue but was detained for a late resume at the "D" Division.

Oluwabukola asserted that after calling his phone multiple times for a week and getting no answer, she learned from another person that her husband had passed away in a cell in "D" Division.

The widow claimed that several police officers tortured her husband Taiye, who had served in the department for 22 years, to death. She was demanding justice at the time.

The Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, Ruth Awi, however, stated that the deceased was intoxicated when he passed out in the cell in her statement over the incident.

The primary causes of the deceased's death were listed as "acute left ventricular failure" and "hypertensive cardiovascular disease" in the five-page post-mortem report, which was issued on May 3rd, 2023, and signed by one Dr. Awelimobor Daniel of the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja. The secondary cause was listed as "multiple superficial soft tissue injuries."

The victim was taken to the hospital already dead and did not slump and pass away as alleged by the police, according to a portion of the autopsy report.

“External examination: young man, not pale, axyanosed, anicteric, no pedal oedema, obvious bruising and external signs/marks of violence are seen over the forehead, face, shoulders, both wrists and on the leg and empty stomach.”
