Makinde At Aare Musulumi's Daughter’s Wedding, Admonishes Couple To Always Take Joint Decision

Governor ‘Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has admonished couples to have a vision and always take decisions jointly in order to have a successful marriage.

He urged couples to hold themselves through the situations of life, saying their oneness would always bring greater results.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, indicated that Governor Makinde stated this on Saturday, when he attended the wedding of the daughter of the Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta states, Alhaji Dawud Makanjuola Akinola, in Ibadan.

The governor, while congratulating the parents of the new couple, enjoined them to leave the couple to make mistakes and correct themselves without any interference.
He said: "Let me use this opportunity to congratulate you and pray that your home shall be fruitful.

"Simply, my word of advice for everyone here and to the parents of the groom and bride is that you need to leave them to make mistakes and correct themselves. I believe no two marriages are the same.
"So, I will say to Mariam and Abdul-Jeleel that now that both of you have become one, you have to take things easy with yourselves.

"I saw how both of you were dancing while coming in. The coordinated moves in the dance steps have shown that when you both hold yourselves through situations of life, you will make a success out of this union.

"It is twenty-three (23) years that I have also been in this business of marriage and it has not been easy. But it shall be easy for you and may God make you both friends even till old age.
"I want to further advise you that there are so many distractions out there, especially in politics.

We may be friends but when it is time for us to take decisions, we do that separately.

"So, there will be distractions just as I have cited an example among us politicians, but for this union, your decisions must be taken jointly.

"Mariam has her vision, Abdul-Jeleel also has his, but those the visions are now joined together. So, most of the decisions that you will be taking must be taken in unison.

"Finally, those of us looking forward to this kind of goodness, I pray that your own day of joy too will come.

"So, on behalf of all of us, the Government and the people of Oyo State, I want to wish you a happy married life. “The union shall be fruitful and filled with a lot of goodness."

Over the last one week, the gist in town has been how Oyo Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin and his better half, Olamidun Ogundoyin (nee Majekodunmi) shut down Ibadan. It was a celebrity-studded party, and indeed a mega one, probably, to round off the events diary of the Ibadan social establishment for the year. Ibadan was on total lockdown.

The wedding ceremony, which started with Engagement and Traditional wedding on Thursday 25th November, 2021, at International Conference Centre within the premises of the University of Ibadan, attracted to the ancient city, top celebrities from all walks of life, across Nigeria and beyond. Popular gospel singer, Yinka Ayefele was on the bandstand for the traditional wedding.

The Church wedding, during which Most Revd Joseph O. Akinfenwa joined the beautiful couple in holy matrimony, held at All Souls’ Anglican Church, Bodija, Ibadan.

As expected of the status of the two families involved, “the Ogundoyins and Majekodunmis,” the two parties were so magnificent. The color themes for the two parties, decorations, settings and entertainment of guests (food, drinks and music) were just superb. The Juju maestro and king of World Beats, Sunny Ade thrilled guests at the reception.

City People’s IBADAN Bureau Chief, DARE ADENIRAN was at the elaborate party and hereby presents to you, some of the interesting gists. You can’t afford to miss the exclusive gists from the mega party which had over 300 celebrity women dazzling in 170k Aso-Ebi and expensive jewelries. The wedding ceremony, tagged #DoTheHonours, had best of the best party vendors who catered for the invited guests. Enjoy the details.

ABOUT THE COUPLE

There is no gainsaying the fact that both Adebo and Olamidun are accomplished young individuals from prominent families. While Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, prior to his foray into politics, was a big player in the entertainment industry. The 34-year-old son of the late Eruwa-born industrialist, Adeseun Ogundoyin and Ibadan popular socialite, Tina Ogundoyin, is the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly. He represents Ibarapa East constituency in the Oyo Assembly. He’s an Agronomist and graduate of Babcock University, Ilisan Remo, Ogun State. Olamidun is equally a successful young woman. She is the daughter of a prominent Egba Chief, Dr. Femi Majekodunmi and Hon. Justice Tokunbo Majekodunmi.

HOW 3 GOVS, OONI & CO STORMED THE CHURCH WEDDING

The wedding ceremony between Adebo and Olamidun couldn’t have been more colorful than it was. Bishop of Ibadan Diocese of Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Bishop Joseph Akinfenwa joined the couple in holy matrimony, at the All Souls’Anglican Church, Bodija, Ibadan. Amongst the top celebrities that witnessed the Church wedding include the host governor, Engr. ‘Seyi Makinde and his counterparts from Ogun and Ondo States; Governor Dapo Abiodun and Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu. Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojájá II, as well as other prominent traditional rulers and high chiefs from across the South-Western States.

MEET THE COUPLE’S PARENTS

The two families; the Ogundoyins and Majekodunmis are both rich and prominent. While Adebo is from the family of late Eruwa-born business mogul, Chief Adeseun Ogundoyin and a successful businesswoman and socialite, Chief (Mrs.) Tina Ogundoyin. Who plays big in the Oil and Gas sector and retail business. Olamidun is, however, from the family of an Egba-born man, Chief (Dr.) Femi Majekodunmi and Hon. Justice Tokunbo Majekodunmi. Chief Majekodunmi, the Baagbile of Egbaland, is the proprietor of the popular Kejide Specialist Hospital in Ibadan and Chairman, Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

IT WAS WATERTIGHT SECURITY AT THE RECEPTION

As expected, the wedding ceremony attracted a lot dignitaries and high net worth individuals to Ibadan. So much was the crowd that the Eleyele-Jericho-Dugbe axis was on lockdown for hours. But as much as the crowd surged, the security within and around the reception was impressively managed. It was devoid of miscreants and unwanted guests. Two access points with card-screening machines were put in place. A major barricade was put around the gigantic marquee, erected at the Ibadan Polo Club Grounds.

THE JAW-DROPPING DECORATIONS

Magnificent! That is the best word to describe the decorations for the two parties; the traditional wedding on Thursday and wedding reception on Saturday. Especially the wedding reception. It was a beautiful scene to behold. The drapes, props, chandeliers, lights and flowers were skillful put together, creating a kind of foreign and African atmosphere. The decorations were handled by House of Dexterity.

In fact, that both families involved in the wedding ceremony are rich, famous and classy clearly showed in everything about the party. The quality of guests, food, drinks, arrangement and choice of musical bands for the two parties.

HOW OVER 300 SOCIETY WOMEN ROCKED DIFFERENT ASO-EBI AND EXPENSIVE JEWELRIES

There was massive turnout of top society women at the party. The reason for this is not farfetched, both Chief (Mrs.) Tina Ogundoyin and Hon. Justice Tokunbo Majekodunmi are well loved and respected withing and outside Ibadan social establishment. That explained why virtually all the women at the party wore  the lace Aso-Ebi and Sanyan headgear. There were various grades of Aso-Ebi, the one for the close friends of groom’s mother and others. It was between 50k and 40k for women and 65k for men for the traditional wedding. While Aso-Ebi for the main wedding was 170k, 60k and 40k for women and 40k for men. There was also general Ankara of 5k. Gold and Sanyan headgear were for the Thursday traditional wedding. While Peach on Peach and Turquoise on Turquoise were for the main party. It was a display of affluence and styles at the party. As some top society women rocked expensive gold and diamond jewelries, as well as other accessories. They have every reason to celebrate, it was their friends’ children’s wedding. In fact, to some, it was a kind of payback time for Chief (Mrs.) Tina Ogundoyin who has always been supportive of her friends when. necessary. These women were all looking gorgeous in their various styles. They include Chief (Mrs.) Bola Dohathy MFR (Bola Immaculate Group of Schools); Alhaja Tawa Fatade; the beautiful wife of late pool magnate and Naira Pool boss, Chief Badero, Laide Badero; the wife of late strongman of Oyo politics, Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu, Yeyelua Bose Adedibu; Falilat Balogun; Bose Atoyegbe; Toyin Saani; Alhaja Mejo; Chief (Mrs.) Ronke Thomas and Mrs. Abiodun Arapaja.

WHAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT TINA OGUNDOYIN & JUSTICE TOKUNBO MAJEKODUNMI

Not many people know that both the groom and bride parents are friends. We can tell you authoritatively that they are long time friends. Though an Ijesha woman, Hon. Justice Tokunbo Majekodunmi grew up in Ibadan. She attended the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University. Her father, Papa Ajileye was also a Judge.

BOSE ADEDIBU’S MOTHERLY ROLE

Chief (Mrs.) Tina Ogundoyin, the Iyaloja of Ibarapaland and Chief (Mrs.) Bose Adedibu, the Yeyelua of Ibadanland are best of friends. That’s a known fact in Ibadan social circle. Their friendship has gone beyond ordinary friends, they have become sisters. So it wasn’t surprising to see Bose Adedibu played a mother figure role at the party. Apart from the fact that she contracted her own food vendor, she also shared different sourvenirs at the party. Both Tina Ogundoyin and Bose Adedibu wore the same Aso-Ebi attire for the party.

THE WEDDING CAKE, GOWN AND SUIT

Have you seen the simple but beautiful wedding cake of the Oyo State House of Assembly Speaker, Adebo and his wife, Olamidun? The 4-step White cake with a touch of Gold was a perfect example of class and elegant. It was designed with a mixture of Pink, White and Gold roses. As beautiful as the cake, so also were the bride’s wedding gown and groom’s suit. Though we couldn’t get the source of the materials but they looked so nice on the couple. So much that Most Rev Joseph Akinfenwa, who was conducting the wedding program, couldn’t but admire the well-cut suit on the groom.

TRADITIONAL RULERS IN THE HOUSE

It was an array of traditional rulers at the party as well. Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja 11; Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi 111; Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji Aje Ogungunniso 1, as ably represented by his wife and other prominent traditional rulers from Oyo, Ogun and Osun States were all there.

WITH LOVE FROM ERUWA

The family of Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin from Eruwa was fully represented at the party. Especially the Obinrin Ile from Olukotun Compound, Anko, Eruwa who rendered Onipepe (a popular but deadly masquerade)’s eulogy to the amazement of guests at the traditional wedding. Anko is the family compound of the late Adeseun Ogundoyin. Other two prominent sons of Eruwa who played a major role at the wedding ceremony are Chief Fadairo and Chief Oni. They both worked and retired from Ogundoyin’s Crown Trust Limited. They stood in as groom’s father at the wedding.

…AND OMOGE SAIDA DAZZLED THEM

Yetunde Olokuta (Y-Stone) remains as beautiful as ever. She is the wife of Ibadan popular socialite and businessman, Demola Olokuta. She looked radiant and fabulous in her lace Aso.Ebi at Tina Ogundoyin’s party. In fact, she stood out in her style and expensive jewelries that, perfectly, complimented her shoes and bag. That is ‘Omoge Saida’ for you. She always makes fashion statement anywhere she finds herself.

WHEN OYO ASSEMBLY SHIFTED BASE

It was quite interesting seeing honourable members of the Oyo State House of Assembly rallying around their Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin. They had their special Aso-Ebi and Cap to march which distinguished them from other guests at the party. They played host to other honorables from other states of the country. Rt. Hon. Bamidele Oleyelogun, Ondo State House of Assembly Speaker led his members to the wedding party. While his counterpart from Kogi, Rt. Hon. Mathew Kolawole also led his Assembly members to Ibadan.

WHO DID WHAT

The events vendors engaged for the wedding ceremony between Adebo and Olamidun were just too many. They handled different aspects of the party; food, drinks, decors, small chops, cocktail, barbecue etc. And they all did their best to make sure all guests were taken care of. Some of them are Jade’s Cuisine, PSL Events, Prestige Catering, Sollizy Drinks, Checkers World, Ola Mummy, Allon Impressions, House of Dexterity and so many others. The King of World Beats, Sunny Ade was on bandstand. The duo of Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, professionally known as Ali Baba and Gbenga Adeyinka GCFR, with ribs cracking jokes, anchored the event.

Timothy Adegoke: Court Denies Adedoyin Bail

A Federal High Court in Abuja has declined the bail request by the detained founder of Oduduwa University, Ile-Ife, Dr. Ramon Adegoke Adedoyin.

Adedoyin had, in an ex-parte motion, filed with a fundamental rights enforcement suit prayed the court to admit him to bail pending the conclusion of investigation by the police or pending the determination of his fundamental rights suit.

On the alternative, he asked that he be allowed access to quality medical facilities of his choice pending the conclusion of police’s investigation and his possible arraignment.

Ruling after listening to Kunle Adegoke (SAN), who led a team of lawyers for Adedoyin, Justice Inyang Ekwo declined to grant any of the prayers.

Instead, Justice Ekwo ordered Adedoyin to serve the motion and other processes in the case on the sole respondent–the Inspector General of Police (IGP)–and adjourned till December 9 for hearing.

Adedoyin, said to be the owner of the Hilton Hotel, Ile Ife, Osun State, where a Masters student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Timothy Adegoke was allegedly murdered, has been arrested for sometime now in relation to the murder.

In a supporting affidavit, Chief Segun Aworinde, who described himself as Adedoyin’s younger brother, said despite being informed that Adedoyin was hypertensive and diabetic, the police refused to release him or allow him access quality health facility since he was arrested on November 15.

Aworinde said he knows “Adedoyin as an established industrialist and educationist and also a business mogul that owns several higher institutions of learning among which is Oduduwa University, Ile-Ife. He is around 65 years of age with business interests spread over the country.

He added that Adedoyin was “arrested on the 15th day of November, 2021 by the respondent (IGP) and has since then been in detention in connection with some allegations bordering on the mysterious death and dumping of the corpse of one Timothy Adegoke who was said to have lodged in the Applicant’s hotel, Hilton Hotels and Resorts, situate, lying and being at Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Be Committed To Your Work, Makinde Charges Oyo Civil/Public Servants

Oyo State Governor, ’Seyi Makinde, on Monday, charged the civil/public servants in the state to be committed to their work. He also admonished them to sustain ethics of the service.

The governor, who was speaking through the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Mrs. Olubamiwo Adeosun, said that his administration has trained over 9,000 civil/public servants to enhance service delivery.

A statement by the Chief Press to the governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, quoted Makinde as saying that his administration will continue to train and retrain the state's workforce in order to enhance its performance in order to engender high productivity.

The statement indicated that Makinde gave the charge while speaking at the training workshop organised by the ministry of establishments and training for civil/public servants, held at the Ibadan Business School, old Bodija, Ibadan.

He said: “When I took over the mantle of leadership on May 29th 2019, I assured the good people of Oyo State that I will bring governance to the doorstep of all and sundry.  One of the ways in achieving this is through the State Civil Service, which is in charge of the implementation of policies for the State Government.

"To this end, it is my conviction to put in place competent, qualitative, dedicated, committed, responsible and incorruptible Civil Service that will be able to stand the test of time.

"Undoubtedly, the Civil Service is the Engine room of any administration hence, the need to train and retrain the state workforce in order to enhance their performance towards high productivity of the service.

"The Ministry of Establishments and Training, being the training arm for both junior and senior staff, usually forward to my office a training work plan, on yearly basis which is promptly approved by me to serve as training manual for each year. Similar training approvals were given to Office of the Head of Service, Local Government Service Commission, Teaching Service Commission and the State Universal Basic Education Board, to conduct trainings relevant to their offices.

"In effect, over 9,000 Public/Civil Servants have been trained to date in various fields since the inception of this administration in May, 2019. Today again, I am sure, is another milestone in the training packages of the Ministry of Establishments and Training.  As I was told, the training modules at this occasion cover Effective Time Management, Emotional Intelligence and Effective Customer Service in the Public Sector.

"The three thematic areas will go a long way to impact in all our participants the best practices of the Public/Civil Service in line with a contemporary world.  You should therefore make the best use of it as we cannot continue to do things the same way and expect different results. Hence, the reason this government places high premium on training and retraining of its staff.

"There is no doubt that Oyo State Civil/Public Service is built around competencies.  This goes to show that the State can boast of having the best brain in all fields of endeavour be it Engineering, Law, Administration, Accounting, Medical etc.  With all these human resources, training the officers cannot be a time and resource waste, but a way of adding quality value to the service.

"I wish you all the very best in your efforts to continue to play the role of significant team members in the continuing efforts to make Oyo State great. We are assured that the time-tested spirit of resilience, commitment to excellence and service attributes for which the public service in Oyo State was known in the past will be re-invigorated as to retrain our hard-earned relevance and respect among the services in the federation.

"More importantly, this administration will continue to raise the bar of governance to make life much more abundant not only for its workers but also the entire citizenry of the State.  Accordingly, we shall ensure regular payment of staff salaries and allowances, to those still in active service and equally not shirk our responsibility in the payment of all the arrears of gratuities inherited from the past administration.

"Also, we shall ensure the continuous payment of monthly pension to the retired workers the same time those in active service receive their salaries.  It is a commitment we have pledged to fulfil. By God’s grace we shall not fail.

"In reciprocating this gesture from government, therefore, I enjoin you all to be committed to your work, sustain the ethics of the State Public/Civil Service and put in your best towards ensuring the development and growth of our dear State."

Earlier, Commissioner for Establishment and Training, Alhaji Ayansiju Lawal, said that a total number of 195 staff were drawn from all Ministries, Departments and Agencies to train them on Effective Time Management, Emotional Intelligence and Effective Customer Service in the Public/Civil Sector.

“In today's programme for instance, we have carefully packaged three modules of training. They are - Effective Time Management, Emotional Intelligence and Effective Customer Service in the Public/Civil Sector. I have implicit confidence that at the end of the training, these three topical areas, will go a long way to further shappen the minds of all our affected workers to be much more time conscious, have emotional stability to face workload and equally imbibe the right attitude for high productivity and cordial relationship with the people they are supposed to serve.”

“Your Excellency, this is our journey so far, and this smooth journey will not have been possible if not for your kind support and flair for staff welfare. "Your Excellency, you are indeed a marvellous leader and we shall remain grateful to you. May God continue to strengthen you in energy, wisdom and sound health."

Oba Dokun Abolarin's First 15 Years On The Throne | By Lasisi Olagunju

On Wednesday, 8th December, 2021, Oba Adedokun Abolarin, the Orangun of Oke Ila in Osun State will be 15 years old on the throne of his fathers. I am not from his kingdom, but I am very connected to his domain. It was in the forested corridors of Ila and Oke-Ila Orangun that dawn met me and I discovered my ori inu. Oba Abolarin is one king who knew before the very beginning that obaship in its pristine, unadulterated form in Yorubaland has a synonym in 'I-surrender-all'.

We spoke before his climb onto the sacred stool of his fathers. "Eru nba mi. I must not fail," he told me during one of our nightly calls. And I responded that he was too good to entertain any fear of failure. But that feeling was normal. Men of sterling resolve, at that stage of liminality, grapple with such foggy fears. What shall tomorrow with its vagueness of looming roles birth? "Our doubts are traitors," said William Shakespeare, "they make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt.” This Oba's sword slashed through the doubts; it was sharp and strong and swift; it cleared all forests of fears. He took the crown.

It is the tradition of the Yoruba that an oba be free to choose the colour of his reign. At his installation, Oba Abolarin was in firm partnership with his ancestors - we call them, the alaseku, the present-past who gave him the torch to bear. His good head made the consummation of the transition rites easy for him and his guides. The option he chose was a calabash of honey (igba oyin lo gbe); then Dokzy became Oba Aroyinkeye I.

An authentic Yoruba would have no problem connecting with the positive spirituality of that cognomen; Aroyinkeye roughly means 'one who has honey to pet the throne.' The fact that his first 15 years have redefined obaship roles in Yorubaland should, therefore, not be a surprise. That he built a free-everything school for children of the nameless poor is central to his mission of using the crown to mint gold coins out of roughened yokels.

That he has planted himself as the connecting rod between the present and the future is still in furtherance of his bridge-building destiny. That he became oba and still holds the hands of his friends and constituencies - town and gown, teaching and mentoring - attests to his genuineness as an omoluabi. He has just started. And you know how original and long lasting honey's sweetness is.

Choosing a king is like choosing a spouse. It is a marriage of destinies between the chosen and the selectors; and it is for good or for ill. If you are in doubt, ask Nigerians how they arrived the present shore. Oba Abolarin superintends a small community of giants in personal and communal progress.

Between the people and the palace, there is no curtain, there is no veil. They have no problem singing the same song of light. The oba loves his people; his people thank their stars - they did not make a wrong choice. At 15 years, his reign has just started. The jorney ahead is very far but his Maker is in the driver's seat. Congratulations, Kabiyesi.

Dowen College: Late Pupil’s Father Vows To Delay Burial Till Tamily Gets Justice

Sylvester Oromoni Snr, the father of a Junior Secondary School two pupil of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, has vowed not to bury his son until justice is served.

This is just as the family marked the deceased’s 12th birthday posthumously on Saturday during which a cake designed as airplane and pilot uniform was cut in memory of his ambition.

The news of Sylvester Jnr’s death went viral on Wednesday following a social media post by his cousin, Perry Oromoni, who alleged that some senior pupils of the college beat him up in his hostel room for refusing to join a cult.

But the school denied the claim, stating that the boy complained of pain in his legs and hip following an injury he sustained while playing football.

The Lagos State Government had shut down the school indefinitely to ensure thorough investigation.

Sylvester Snr, in an interview on Saturday, said his son would not be buried until justice was served – no matter how long it takes.

He said, “How can he be buried? I cannot bury him until I get justice, until I get to the end of the matter. Even if it takes two or three years, we would be going on. I pray God keep us alive.”

According to the father, about 100 people were present at the posthumous birthday celebration marked with two cakes and a large picture frame of the late Sylvester in various poses.

The father said, “For his birthday today (Saturday), we cut the cakes, displayed his pictures and prayed for his soul to rest in peace. We also went for a church programme after cutting the birthday cakes.

“His sister based in the United State of America asked one of her friends to bake a pilot-themed cake for his birthday because he had always wanted to be a pilot.”

Sylvester Snr however said he would miss his son’s rapport, smiles, love, presence and company.

He said, “Anytime he comes on holiday and I am at home, he is always all over me. We eat together, he asks questions a lot; he is very inquisitive. He can operate his laptop very well and I don’t know how to do that so he guides me on how to do it.”

Also celebrating the posthumous birthday on her Instagram page, a Nigerian actress, Tonto Dikeh, said she would “drop flowers and gifts” at the school’s gate.

She also posted a video of a man dropping a bouquet of flowers and a Teddy bear at the school’s gate and a card with the words, “Happy birthday Captain Sylvester. Rest in Peace Champ! You are celebrated. King Tonto.”

Meanwhile, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has backed the indefinite closure of the school.

Okowa, in a  Facebook post on Saturday morning, expressed sadness over the incident and condoled with the family of the deceased.

Okowa wrote, “Last night, I spoke to Mr. Sylvester Oromoni, the father of the late Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, the Dowen College student who unfortunately died under very controversial and unclear circumstances.

“During the call, I expressed my agreement with the decision of the Lagos State Government to launch an investigation into the death of Sylvester, a native of Warri South LGA in Delta State.

“As a government that places priority on the lives of our citizens within and outside the state, we are determined to pursue this case to the end. The matter must be investigated, perpetrators apprehended, punished to serve as a very strong deterrence against future occurrences.”

Similarly, Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, in a statement on Saturday by his media aide, Yomi Odunuga, commended the Lagos State Government for shutting down the school, expressing shock and sadness over the death of Sylvester Jnr.

He said, “The closure of the school will help children, who are back home, to share their experiences with their parents and guardians. They are in the safety of their homes where they fear no immediate reprisals of the revelations.

“The incident is one too many as it reminds us of how children in schools are subjected to dehumanising treatments, with some losing their lives in the process. My profound condolences to the Oromoni family and it is my prayer that God will give the family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”

Meanwhile, the Ijaw Youth Council has demanded justice for the late pupil.

The IYC, in a statement on Saturday by its national spokesman, Ebilade Ekerefe, also called on the Lagos State Government to suspend the operating licence of the college to serve as a deterrent to other schools.

Ekerefe further demanded the arrest of the principal of the college, pupils mentioned and staff members involved in the alleged attempt to change the narrative that led to the boy’s death.

He said, “They have shown evidence of a deliberate attempt to conceal murder. The fake story about the hip injury from a game of football shows in clear language that they are complicit in the crime.

“We also demand from the Lagos State Government and the Ministry of Education that the operating licence of the school be suspended to send a clear signal to careless institutions that place emphasis on their businesses to the utter exclusion of the lives of the future leaders in their care.”

Ekerefe urged the police and other security agencies to be professional and not to compromise the investigation.

Also, the National Association of Delta Ijaw Students has issued a two-week ultimatum to the Lagos State Government and Dowen College to bring the alleged killers of Sylvester Oromoni to book.

This was contained in a statement on Saturday jointly signed by NADIS President and Secretary, Ayigo Festus and Brisibe Godgift respectively.

Dowen College, Cults and The Beast In Our Children's Hearts | By Festus Adedayo

In the last one week in the American and Nigerian cities of Michigan and Lagos, 1983 Nobel Literature winner and British author, William Golding, was literally woken up from the dead. Golding, novelist, playwright and poet, wrote the highly celebrated novel, Lord of the Flies. If you underestimate the holy writ’s admonition that foolishness resides (is bound up) in the heart of a child, then you need to read this Golding’s 1954 debut novel. Woven round myriad thematic concerns, chief of which was the innate bestiality in man, Lord of the Flies, as a name, derived its etymology from the word, which in Latin means Prince of Devils and in Hebrews, a Philistine god, the Beelzebub.
It is the story of a group of British schoolboys, while Britain was entrapped in a raging war, who had the plane evacuating them shot down and were lucky to survive in a deserted tropical island. Stranded on this desolate and uninhabited island, the boys then resolved on the need, which eventually turned disastrous, to govern themselves. This led them to the process of formation of rules and a system of administration of their island. However, lacking the civilizing impulse of an adult, they eventually relapsed into their Hobbesian state of nature, exhibiting feral, warlike behavior, violence, brute force and cannibalism, with Golding teasing out the theme of man’s fundamentally savage human nature from the novel.

Last Tuesday, three students were killed in a shooting which occurred at Oxford High School, Oxford, Michigan in the United States. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office identified the victims as Tate Myre (16), Hana St. Juliana (14), and Madisyn Baldwin, (17). Eight other victims were shot but sustained various degrees of injuries, including a teacher in the school. Of the lot, three’s cases were dire, including a 15-year-old boy who got shot in the head, a 14-year-old girl who was hit by  bullets in the chest and is on a ventilator, as well as a 17-year-old girl, who was also shot in the chest.

The students were shot by their fellow student, Ethan Crumbley, a 15-year-old sophomore, in whose custody a semiautomatic handgun was found as at the time of his arrest.  Police’s preliminary investigation revealed that the instrument of violence, the gun, was purchased by Ethan’s father on November 26, with three 15-round clips. Police also said that the suspect had recently posted photos on social media of himself shooting at imaginary targets and from investigations, the weapon of crime appeared similar to the gun Ethan practiced with. Immediately, James and Jennifer Crumbley, parents of the teenager, who has since been charged in the shooting, were arrested and charged with four counts each of involuntary manslaughter.

In Lagos, Nigeria, one of the raging subjects of the people’s anger today is the death of Sylvester Oromoni (Junior), a 12-year-old pupil of elite Dowen College, in the Lekki area of Lagos State. Two diametrically opposed allegations have been made about circumstances surrounding his death. While the family claimed that the lad sustained fatal injuries from wounds sustained from his colleagues’ attempt to forcefully initiate him into a school cult, hinging their claims on the disclosures made by the now deceased boy, the school claimed that Oromoni died from injuries he sustained from a football game.

The above two cases are one of the many incidents of adolescent asocial behavior that the world is grappling with today. Not strictly a new phenomenon, antisocial behavior operates as a cluster of related behaviours which range from aggression, violence, temper tantrums, lying, burglary, stealing, substance abuse, early sexual behavior, among others, rampant among adolescents. Though psychologists say the behavior is normative and is one of the features of certain ages of child development, these malevolent manifestations among children act as strong predictors of potential criminal behavior in adulthood.

Many of the adults who eventually grew into responsible parents and citizens today were at some point in their developmental growths notorious antisocial elements who gave their parents and society headaches. However, the reality is that, a huge chunk of these adults, weaned from the ashes of these antisocial behaviours, never recovered from the blows of the effects of their antisocial behavior. By the time they attempt to take up their destinies in their hands, it is almost always too late, thereby consigning them to the heaps and dustbins of life.

So many reasons have been adduced as reasons why children, many of whom hail from responsible homes, dither into reprehensible antisocial behavior. While peer group pressure and pollution by playmates who themselves are products of fractured homes, are factors that loom large in reasons why children go off the handle in their adolescence, parental influence is another major factor. Studies have revealed that antisocial parents, in their display of these behavioural patterns at home, rub off hugely on their wards who internalize these behaviours, unbeknown to them. Thus, psychologists have established that possessing an antisocial parent is a major force in the prediction of violent or serious delinquency found in adolescent and young children.

Lord of the Flies and the holy writ earlier cited above tell us that within the child is resident innate bestiality that parents and society must pertinently and painstakingly tame in a child. The problem is that parents have very wrong conception of the period of childhood and adolescence. They misinterpret the period as a time when the child is naïve and incapable of taking on delinquent behaviours. This is why parenting is a big job, something in the mould of the structural platform of a house construction which bespeaks the kind of super-structural objects that may be placed on the foundation. In the Michigan shooting event, unknown to James and Jennifer Crumbley, the couple was the ethos that Ethan learnt by rote. When they thought he was inattentive or absent from occurrences in his surroundings, he was fascinated by the piece of metal that his father had just purchased and perhaps secretly wished that someday, he would get to that same level of accomplishment of wielding a weapon that conferred on him power over the unknown other. The fatal shooting at Oxford High School, Michigan, for Ethan, was the culmination of that dream, the power to subjugate the other under his awesome powers.

The holy writ earlier cited was not oblivious of the constitutive innate bestial nature of the child. It recommended that “the rod of correction shall drive it (the Beelzebub) far from him.” Traditional African society also learnt early enough that the heart of the child is stony and only chastisement could soften it. Unfortunately, the technological modern age has purged punishment from the list of objects that can be used to rid the heart of the child of the Lord of the Flies. In some western societies, it is even criminal, a violation of the child’s rights, for parents to administer cudgel on their children. This has made the Beelzebub in the children to acquire multiple notorieties like the biblical Madman of Gadarene and the inability of society to dimension its bestial inclinations. Technology has further worsened the lot of the children, literally ensuring that a community of maggots meanders out of the bodies of our children. They have access to occurrences in practically all parts of the world within a twinkle of an eye and, rather than being a blessing, this exposure has further aggravated the rot in their hearts.

The world is witnessing a complex metastasis of violence, in nodes that are unprecedented. Weapons are acquiring frightening sophistication and small arms are as widespread as mushroom on the farm. Our children, whose brains are admittedly more sophisticated than ours, their parents, are moving with the tide of a sophisticated world. Deploying technology and the wizardry of their brains, they get involved in antisocial behaviors and crimes which, in our wildest imaginations, we cannot grapple with or anticipate in them.

While not prejudging what the outcome of investigations into the Dowen College death from alleged cult initiation will be, our society is just crying where we should exhibit admittance of our errs. The incidence of secret cultism in our schools has become a matter of concern to those who know how this negative growth is becoming a crisis. By 1999, more than 56 secret cults were said to have existed in Nigeria’s 133 higher institutions of learning and had penetrated secondary and even primary schools. Right now, the figure must have quadrupled because, the more civilization we receive, the more we sink into complex notorieties.

I have spoken in earlier pieces about the power of the dreaded ancient secret cult, Ogboni fraternity in Yoruba traditional African society. Membership of it is borne out of search for power, protection and fame/wealth. Cultism is one of the carryovers of traditional African society that has survived to this age of modernism. It arose from the need to protect and sustain some basic interests among a group of people, whose details are shrouded from being exposed to outsiders. Cult membership is usually a restricted affair and members are known to swear themselves to oaths of allegiance. This is how secret cults/societies have festered in centuries.

There are a plethora of metaphysical powers that initiates of blood, especially in fraternities and cults like Ogboni cult, wield and which entrap those in search of such authorities. Believing in the potent power of the Earth as a binding force, Ogboni use the edan (a twin object of a man and woman pegged on a cylindrical brass spare) in their lledi (shrine house) and sprinkles of blood to subtly encode obedience to rules and secrets. Not only does Ogboni ensure secrecy of affairs among its initiates, an espirit de corps is prized out of the initiates by blood oaths, thus suborning potential squealers off revelations of Ogboni secrets and dark acts of the initiates.

Peter Morton-Williams, former pro-vice chancellor of Ulster University and an eminent anthropologist, who worked for many years in Nigeria and Ghana, researching West African social anthropology, a leading authority on the history and culture of the Yoruba people, did an anthropological study of the Ogboni, entitled The Yoruba Ogboni cult in Oyo and An Outline of the Cosmology and Cult Organization of the Oyo Yoruba (1964).  In them, Morton-Williams outlines the potency of blood in sacrifices and oath, explaining the interface with and how the public sphere is being recently inundated with hackneyed recounts of the cultic oath mess of our children.

This work is a study in what probably drives interests in secret societies and why the elite take unqualified voyage into it, in spite of rapacious embrace of Christianity and Islam, and why the Ogboni still has controlling importance in Yoruba religious organization, centuries after it was established.

If it was found out that indeed, the pupils of Dowen College were attempting to recreate what their fathers and forefathers practiced for centuries, with same ferocity and manifest wickedness, how does our society want to blame the messenger and refrain from blaming the message? Golding’s Lord of the Flies, represented in boy characters like Ralph, Simon and Piggy (with his perceived metaphysical eyeglasses) not only built a central paranoia among the boys, it elasticized the concept of struggle and contestations in a metaphysical felon that must be battled.

This, the novelist represented in the boys’ belief that a supposed monster called the “beast” existed on the island. The “beast” which at one point was felt to be the pilot who ejected from a crashed plane and whose carcass hung on the tree, soon became a fetish around which the whole of the children began contestations. The Dowen College students, while not likely to have totally apprehended what a cult was, perhaps also had the paranoia of power contestation that the boys in Golding’s had. Flexing of muscles, mixed up with violence and toughness, are fed into this game of wanting to behave like their fathers at home.

While we wail and cry over the calamity that befell the Oromonis and the victims of the Crumbley murders in Michigan – if it is found to be true – can we also press charges against the parents of the allegedly offending pupils at Dowen, especially if they are found to be accessories after the fact of the violent behavior of their wards, as the police did with the Crumbleys?

The greater worry for us should be that antisocial behaviors of all kinds have wormed themselves into the hearts of many of our children. It behooves parents and guardians to create time for the proper moral and psychological nurturing of their children, especially in this age where everyone is busy in the rat race for existentialist desires.  Now is the time to mould their future, rather than heap on teachers the responsibility of keeping our wards on the straight and narrow, forgetting that the teachers also have their own demons that they daily contend with.

Oba Dokun Abolarin’s 15 years on the throne

In this age when Nigerian traditional institutions are fast becoming the preoccupation of charlatans and those whom esophagus drives to the throne, one traditional ruler in Yorubaland stands out. He is Oba Adedokun Abolarin, the Orangun of Oke-Ila in Osun State. Installed the Orangun in 2006, Oba Abolarin will clock 15 years on the throne on Wednesday, December 8.

My path and that of the royal father crossed in 1999 on the reconstituted editorial board of the Nigerian Tribune newspaper. On the board, which had the late Dr. Chris Uroh as Chairman, Dokzy, as we used to call him, unbeknown to us that we were stomping on an Ori Ade, (one whose head was destined to wear the beaded traditional crown) was the sole legal mind who intervened on editorial topics that bordered on the legal on the board.

It didn’t take me long to realize that Dokzy had an obsessive passion for education. He would obstinately stick to the need for our youths of today to walk the path of education and was a staunch believer in the Awolowo School of politics. Outside of the board, Dokzy consistently asked what my next educational move was. In his recognized evocative manner of advocating his points at board meetings, Dokzy was always very serious while marshalling his points and waxing lyrical in the process. You would think he was a poet on a poetry troubadour.

Dokzy gave me the one and only opportunity of meeting the demigod-like Professor Emeritus of History, Isaac Adeagbo Akinjogbin, who was the first Professor and Head of Department of History at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. Akinjogbin, who authored the highly venerated texts Dahomey and Its Neighbour, 1708-1818″ (1987), Ewe Iwoyi 1968) and The Story of Ketu (1867) died July 27, 2008 at age 78. Apparently having got wind of the professor coming to the Ibadan Premier Hotel for an event, Dokzy took me there, to the feet of this demigod, and asked me to document his thoughts for posterity in a newspaper interview. I remember having asked Akinjogbin if he was bothered that some people read nihilism into some of his historical views and he disclaimed it immediately.

When Dokzy was installed as Orangun of Oke Ila in 2006, many who knew him were thoroughly shocked. Yes, he pontificated on the purity of the past, especially Nigeria’s First Republic, coating this with his vast understanding of developments in Yorubaland and especially, the geography and historical figures who once lived in Ibadanland, no one had an inkling that he was of the royal blood or that even if offered, the very urbane Dokzy, with his very profound sartorial power, would condescend to be numbered among those aged group. By then, Dokxy had established the renown of a successful legal practitioner by his Dokun Abolarin & Co, with a vast network among the Nigerian social and political class. Shortly before he mounted the stool, he was appointed and served as Special Adviser (Legal) to Senator Pius Anyim, who was then the Senate President of Nigeria.

Not long after he mounted the throne of his forefathers, the reason why Providence placed Oba Abolarin on the stool and why he gladsomely did not refuse to be made the king of his people, became manifest. He began the Oba Abolarin College and rallied all his social and political networks down to this rusty town of Oke-Ila. Highly cerebral and a teacher of teachers who taught so many at the Oyo State College of Arts and Science (OSCAS) with his MSc in Political Science, before veering into law, Oba Abolarin has since been deploying this teaching acumen on the children of the poor he assembled in his college, the result of this exercise being the cache of excellent children the school has been graduating.

This is wishing Kabiyesi, Oba Dokun Abolarin, Aroyinkeye I, BSc (Political Science), MSC (International Relations) LLB, BL, a very happy anniversary. May God continue to sustain him for humanity, for decades to come.

Makinde At Deputy’s Daughter's w Wedding, Says Couples Must Have j Joint Dreams To Succeed

Governor ‘Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has maintained that couples must have joint dreams in order to make a success of their marriage.

He stated that for peace, love and harmony to exist in the home, husbands and wives would have to put individual dreams aside.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, indicated that Governor Makinde stated this on Saturday, when he attended the wedding of the daughter of the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Rauf Olaniyan, in Ibadan.

The governor, while congratulating the parents of the new couple, said the marital journey is never an easy one but one that both parties would need to work together to build.

He said: "I want to congratulate the parents of the couple, the Afolabis and Engineer and Professor Olaniyan. I congratulate you all.

"It is just one simple advice I have for the couple. What the Holy Bible says is that you will leave your parents, come together and you will become one.

So, decisions have to be taken jointly.
"I have been in this business for about 23 years and I can tell you that it is not an easy business. You need to put the dreams of each other aside and have a joint dream, and the joint dream is what will bring peace, harmony and development into the union.

"So, on behalf of all of us, the government, and the people of Oyo State, I want to wish you a happy married life. The union shall be fruitful and filled with a lot of goodness."
