Following her arraignment for alleged defamation against Erisco Foods Limited, a Federal High Court in Abuja remanded Chioma Okoli in custody.
Hearing the two allegations that were filed against her, Ms. Chioma denied any misconduct Tuesday in front of trial judge Peter Lifu.
Under Nigeria's Cybercrime Act, she is facing charges. To make a decision regarding the defendant's bail request, Mr. Lifu postponed the lawsuit to Friday, May 31st.
He placed the accused under detention in custody until the outcome of the bail hearing.
During the bail request hearing on Tuesday, Inibehe Effiong, the attorney for Ms. Okoli, provided a medical report and contended that his client miscarried due to the psychological distress she had as a result of the case.
However, Ms. Okoli's attorney for the prosecution, Abdulrashid Sidi, implored the judge to deny her request for release. He argued that the accused person might breach bail.
Ms. Okoli had violated the conditions of an earlier administrative bail that the police had given her, Mr. Sidi informed the judge.
Ms. Okoli was detained by the authorities in September 2023 after she wrote in a review that the tomato paste she had purchased from a market was sweet.
The paste, called Nagiko tomato mix, is produced in Lagos by Erisco Foods Limited. On September 17, 2023, she posted the remark on her Facebook page.
