Though the much-touted national convention of the ruling party All Progressives Congress (APC), held on Saturday June 23rd, 2018, at the Eagle Square Abuja, had come and gone and new executives who will steer affairs of the party for the next four years have been elected, but events that played out at the convention are still subjects of discussion within the political circle across the country.
Lots of questions, as per unity within the party and Internal democracy are concerned, have come up. But as expected of a mega party made up of people with diverse backgrounds and interests, possibility of misunderstanding or collision can' totally be ruled out. And that was exactly the situation at APC's convention.
One of the high points of the events, however, was the powerful speech of the National Leader of APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In which, he recounted the historic merger that gave birth to APC some years back; the many battles that followed and the landmark success recorded by the party during the 2015 general elections.
Tinubu didn't only speak about the party's achievements after the said election, but also reaffirmed their commitment towards bringing about good governance, which Preeident Mohammadu Buhari's led administration represents. While he admitted that, indeed, there are challenges facing the party, Tinubu urged members of APC family to settle their differences amicably in order to prepare for the bigger battle ahead, especially the 2019 general elections.
Apparently speaking about those perceived to be enemies within APC (it is an open secret that some top members of the party like Senate President Bukola Saraki and House of Reps Speaker Yakubu Dogara and co have been having running battle with leadership of the party), Tinubu emphasised on why any attempt by some people to derail APC from its progressive agenda must be resisted.
In his words, "Before closing, I must mention something of high concern. Our progressive agenda has been hampered because elements of the PDP remain embedded in the many agencies and ministries so crucial to daily governance.
They have been as a fifth column, undermining our policies at every turn. While impeding reform, they also plot the comeback of their reactionary brethren to power.
This is something we should no longer abide. Our party teems with competent, reform-minded people who would perform admirably in these positions.
It is time to sweep out the PDP remnants and put in position people, who actually care about the people.
Some among us feared that today we would be joined by the presence of rain. Don’t fret. Let the rain fall if it must. For it is a sign of a great washing.
We, the party of the broom, should understand more than anyone else what this represents. The rain symbolizes that we are to wash away the remaining shards of the old, unjust politics so that we can set forth a better path for Nigeria,"he said.
