Kunle Afolayan's 'Anikulapo', Tobi Bakre, others win big at 2023 AMVCA

The ninth edition of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA), which celebrated the best in African cinema, was presented on Saturday.

Miss Universe 2019 from South Africa, Zozi Tunzi, and media host broadcaster Ik Osakioduwa were the hosts for the event, which took place at the Eko Hotel Convention Hall on Victoria Island, Lagos.

With four red carpet hosts-Toke Makinwa, Uti Nwachukwu, Sika Osei, and VJ Adams-the first portion of the main event had already begun in style.

The renowned award kicked off at precisely 7 o'clock in the evening with an electrifying cultural show for the audience.

Multichoice's Chief Executive Officer (CEO), John Ugbe, reaffirmed the company's dedication to recognizing artists in the creative sector.

He stated, "Rewarding the best in the continent, inspiring filmmakers to deliver top-notch entertainment to our viewers' homes."

The night began well for the Kunle Afolayan's film Anikulapo, which took home five trophies at this year's ceremony and emerged as the top winner.

Anikulapo took home awards for Best Indigenous Language (Yoruba), Best Overall Movie, Best Sound Editor (movie/TV series), Best Writer (movie/TV series), and Best Sound Track (movie/TV series) out of the 16 categories it was nominated for.

The Crime and Justice television show won "Best Picture Editor," while Wale Adeleke won "Best Art Director" for the Yoruba epic film "Ageshinkole."

The skit "Back from the future" by Elozonam Ogbolu and Kiekie, better known by their stage names, and Bukunmi Adeaga Ilori, was awarded Best Online Content of the Year. The duo shared the prize for the category.

Brotherhood, directed by Jadesola Osiberu, won Best Movie in West Africa, while Crime and Justice received "Best Television Series."

The audience applauded loudly when it was announced that Bimbo Ademoye had won her maiden AMVCA award for Best Actress in Comedy, while Samuel Perry, better known as Broda Shaggy, took home the trophy in the male division.

Tobi Bakare received the Best Actor award for the film Brotherhood, while Osas Ighodalo got the Best Actress award for the film Man of God. Best Multichoice Talent Factory went to Leaked.

The Best Mnet Telenovela went to Mpali, and the Best Mnet Unscripted Originals went to King Buga.

For the film 4-4-44, Efe Irele earned the Best Supporting Actress award, and Abiseta Ahmed took home the Best Supporting Actor honor.

Enioluwa Adeoluwa, a Nigerian influencer, and Beauty Tukura, a former BBNaija housemate, took home the prestigious Best Dressed male and female titles.

For her efforts and career in the film industry, Patience Ozokwo was given the 2023 Industry Merit Award. Femi Odugbemi, the head of the award's judges, gave the prize.

Ozokwo praised the AMVCA organizers for the honor and expressed gratitude to her supporters for supporting her.

It was observed that Sola Onayiga, Ada Ameh, Sammie Okposo, Leonard Chimezie, Osmond Gbadebo, Gbenga Richards, Johnson Davidson, and Murphy Afolabi were among the creative minds who had passed away.

Some of Iyanya and Tiwa Savage's big songs enthralled the audience.
