Council Dissolution: New Oyo Governor, ALGON On Collision Course

The newly inaugurated governor of Oyo State, HE Seyi Makinde and the Oyo State chapter of Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) are set for a serious battle.

Shortly after the handling over, Gov. Makinde, in a press statement signed by his Chief of Staff, Chief Bisi Ilaka, directed that all local governments executive be dissolved and that the chairmen should handover to their Heads of Local Government Administration (HLA) or the most Senior Directors in their respective local government areas and councils.

"His Excellency, the Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Oluseyi Makinde has directed as follows:
1. That all local Government authorities, Local Council Development Authorities be dissolved with immediate effect.

2. That all Local Government Chairmen are to hand over to their Heads of Local Government Administration (HLA) or the most Senior Directors in their local government areas and councils.

3. That all Boards of Parastatals and corporations be dissolved.

4. That embargo be placed on all Local and State Government accounts until further directives," the statement reads.

ALGON has, however, reacted to the purported dissolution, describing as illegal and unconstitutional. They therefore mad known their decision to seek redress in the court of law. This was contained in press release signed by the Chairman of the Oyo State chapter of the association, Hon. Abass Aleshinloye.

"It has come to the notice of  ALGON Oyo State branch that the new governor of Oyo State, His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has purportedly dissolved all democratically elected local government in the state.

This to say the least is UNCONSTITUTIONAL unwise, unexpected and too hasty for a new government that is yet to find its feet.

This illegality was reported in the news media.

ALGON Oyo rejects this unconstitutional act of Mr. Governor. It is illegal and a contempt of a subsisting court injunction  against any dissolution of the councils as ordered by Justice A. A. Aderemi of High Court 2, Ibadan, Oyo State., on May 6, 2019.

We wish to appeal to all duly elected  local government chairmen, councillors, supervisors and Oyo State citizens in these respective councils to  remain calm and be peaceful.

ALGON will seek all democratic and constitutional means to correct this illegal act.
All  will be apprrpriately updated as events unfold.

We count on your solidarity and maximum moral support in this democratic struggle".
