Hon. Abayomi Oke, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Oyo State, has assured the Referees Association in the state of government's support to enhance the development of sports in the state.

Oke gave this assurance in his office recently during a courtesy visit by the association.

According to him, “the present administration in the state is ready to work with all the relevant stakeholders for the development of sports in the state. We are ready to reorganize and restructure the Shooting Stars, Crown Football Club and teams in other sports in order to ensure that Oyo State excels in competitions at all times.

“We will not do this restructure alone. We need all stakeholders to be part of it. We are taking sports to another height and we want to know that our Pace Setter status is not a fluke. We will set the pace in football, basketball, tennis, boxing and other sports. We cannot do this alone; hence, we need you the referees and other stakeholders to make sports interesting and attractive in the state,” Oke pointed out.

The commissioner noted that lots of programmes and activities had been put in place to boost the sporting activities in the state, such as, secondary school competition for the ages of 13 to 15, table tennis competition among various age groups, basketball competitions among secondary schools and volleyball competitions for all.

Earlier in his speech, the Chairman of the Referees association, Mr. Mr. Nureni Jimoh applauded the state government on the area of its infrastructural development across the state and also commended Mr. Oke for his innovation in sports and youth development.

He stressed that with the assumption of office of Mr. Oke,  as commissioner for youth and sports; the sports sector in the state is witnessing some change. He stated that the turn out of the spectators at the stadium has been on the increase and highly commendable.

Mr. Jimoh appealed to the state government to take the restructuring of shooting stars football club as a matter of urgency, saying that, government expenditure on sporting activities in the state should be justified with positive results.

In his words, “We give kudos to the governor for his interest in sports in the state. He has demonstrated his love for the Shooting Stars as well by being one of the spectators at one of the matches. The Olubadan also came to support the darling team of the state. We commend the commissioner for making these possible and urge him not to relent in his efforts to turn sports around in the state.

Mr. Jimoh further called on governor Ajimobi to continue his developmental strides in the state, adding that, well-meaning people as well as those inclined to good governance would continue to support the government’s programmes.
