There was anxiety on Saturday as rumours of the escape of the suspected mastermind of the October 1, 2010 bombing in Abuja, Charles Okah who is also a leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) filtered in.
Reports had it that Okah, who is the brother of Henry Okah, who is serving a jail term in South Africa escaped on Friday, June 24 by scaling the high fence of the prison walls around 7:30 PM Nigerian time.
The Nigerian Prisons Service has however debunked the escape story. “It is not true that he escaped,” the spokesperson for the Nigerian Prisons Service, Francis Enobore, told Premium Times.
“He is there (Kuje prison) hale and hearty. The comptroller of prisons in charge of the FCT was there less than 30 minutes ago and he saw him there. I spoke to the comptroller.”
Mr. Enobore however admitted that there was an “incident” at the prison on Friday night.
