"I Learnt A Lot Under Obasanjo", Atiku Speaks As He Emerges PDP Presidential Candidate

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President, has been declared winner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)'s presidential primaries which held in Port Harcourt.

Atiku, on Sunday, won in a landslide victory in the  primaries with a total of 1,532 votes, beating other 10 contenders in the race, to fly the party's flag in the coming 2019 general elections. 

Governor Aminu Tambuwal, who was closest to him had 693 votes. Senate President, Bukola Saraki had 317 while Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso had 158.

With this development, Atiku will have to face the incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari who emerged the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

About 3,274 delegates were at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt and took part in the primary which produced the following results.

Sule Lamido – 96
Kabiru Turaki – 65

Datti Ahmed – 5

Atiku Abubakar, 72, served as the second elected vice-president of
Nigeria between 1999 and 2007.

In his acceptance speech, the former Vice President thanked all the other contestants for the sense of unity, purpose and commitment they displayed.

“I am ever ready to work with each and every one of them for the realisation of the victory of our party in the forthcoming elections. I cannot do it alone,” he said.

He also paid tribute to former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He pointed out that he would not have succeeded as a presidential candidate if President Olusegun Obasanjo had not made him his vice president, back in 1999.

“Under his tutelage, I learnt quite a lot, I wish to pay my personal tribute to him”, he said.
