Will Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu have his way in his desire to get rid of Oyegun?
So far the erstwhile National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been made to lick his wound in silence and in private with the way his wishes were trampled upon in the choice of the Senate leadership and Speakership of the House of Representatives, and, in the selection of some of his 'prodigal' sons against his wishes by President Buhari as Ministers.
It is obvious that Tinubu is not as influential as before in a regime he helped to install. The Ondo crisis may be a boiling point of his frustration, understandably.
Asiwaju must rise above these initial setback, review his role and fashion out a way he can remain relevant while not appearing overbearing. Not a few people are frustrated with his overbearing influence and would like to cut him to size.
He needs to take a back-seat position and strategically reconsider his role in his party. I fear it is too soon and unfair to look him in the face given the level of his contribution over the years in the development of our democracy.
Looking back, he must sincerely have moments of regrets in his tactics, especially his desire to be seen as a Lord whose words and every wishes must come to pass, undermining those who commit to him and seeking a loyalty he hardly can give. To me, the insult that a member of his party hurled the way of his wife is bigger than what Oyegun has just done.
Who is right and wrong in this instance will remain controversial because Tinubu is also guilty of the same thing he accuses Oyegun of. And Tinubu is right to reject that inglorious tittle of national leader, albeit too late, because no one in his party see him as such.
This is a low point for this important politician, but it is far from drawing a curtain on his illustrious political career. For a long time to come, Asiwaju will remain relevant in the shape and direction of the politics of our nation as he is bound to becomes less trusting, which may not be a good strategy eventually, but I have no doubt that anyone who thinks Tinubu is done is the biggest moron of the century.
He has what it takes, and he still has Lagos in his pouch. That will continue to matter, I can tell you.
