Reports emerged yesterday that some senators have kicked against the former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musliu Obanikoro's screening at the senate, as some of the ministerial nominees were screened.
It was exclusively gathered that the senate almost find itself in another show of shame as whether Obanikoro should be screened or not is being discussed.
While the Senate President David Mark solicited for Obanikoro to be accorded the respect of usual tradition of "Bow and Go" normally given to former members of the National Assembly. A process that allows a ministerial nominee to just take a bow before the senate without being questioned. Some senators we gathered insisted that Obanikoro should be properly screened especially because of his involvement in the alleged Ekiti polls rigging tape leaked to the public some weeks back. Opposition senators as well as some of PDP senators against Obanikoro's screening maintained that it will be sub judice for the Senate to act on a matter that is pending before a court. As the suit filed against Obanikoro’s nomination is still pending in a Lagos court. Ministerial nominees that were screened yesterday included Senator Patricia Akwashiki (Nasarawa State), who was asked to “bow and go”; Prof. Nicholas Akise Ada (Benue State); Col. Augustine Okwudiri Akobundu (Abia State) and Mr. Fidelis Nwankwo (Ebonyi State). The senate however shifted screening of the remaining nominees to next week. The nominees that have not being screened apart from Obanikoro include Mrs. Hauwa’u Lawan (Jigawa State), Mr. Kenneth Kobani (River State) and Senator Joel Danlami Ikenya (Taraba State).
