Dr. Ayuba Wabba, the newly emerged Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, while addressing journalists in Abuja yesterday, has said that the #18,000 minimum wage earlier agreed upon is longer realistic.
Dr. Wabba said this is because of the economic situation of the country, as the falling global price of crude oil at the international market, has negatively affected Nigeria's economy, thereby becomes imperative to review the minimum wage. He said the devaluation of Naira by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has weaken the purchasing power of an average worker.
He however promised that in the face of the dwindling economy fortunes, the labour movement would dialogue with the Federal Government and other employers of labour, to protect workers' interest.
Wabba also admitted that though there were challenges in the election process that produced him, but said that the Union remains united and would use all possible means to address the arising issues from the election accordingly.
